  • Disney's Dinosaur

Dinosaur typifies why most serious gamers stay away from movie-to-video-game properties. More often than not, they don't play well or look anything like the films they are meant to re-create. While there are exceptions, Dinosaur is the rule.
As you have probably guessed from the Disney logo on the front of the packaging, Dinosaur is an action-adventure that is based on the Disney animated feature film of the same name. The plot and dialogue of Dinosaur is irritating, but not as much as the awkward control and the substandard graphics. The game puts you in control of three characters: Aladar, a large iguanodon who relies on his swift charge and tail slap; Zini, a lemur who can jump and run very fast; and Flia, a pteranodon who can fly and glide through levels and is also the master of a swoop attack. All of the prehistoric beasts' skills are designed to complement each other. As you make your way through the game, you must use their skills in tandem to traverse the game's various stages. The PlayStation controller's shoulder buttons allow you to switch between characters.

Sandbox Studios, the game-design firm that developed Dinosaur for Disney Interactive, has not done this license justice. The environments are large, but extremely bland and unattractive, further evidence of the game's poor graphics and overall rushed feel.

  • Blade Runner

An excellent and substantial adventure game with multiple paths and endings.

  • PixelJunk Shooter

The next downloadable game from Kyoto-based developer Q-Games is the strategic shooter PixelJunk™ #4 (working title). In PixelJunk #4, players pilot a subterranean exploration vehicle to explore the interior of diverse cave-like complexes. The player must affect the surrounding and dynamic terrain to progress. The goal is to safely navigate through each vivid stage and rescue survivors scattered about the cavernous environment. Each stage is in-effect a flow simulation whereby the player attempts to control various types of liquid (water, magma, etc) and solid matter (rock, earth) either by destroying it, manipulating it or moving it. These dynamic fluid effects are at the heart of the game’s visuals.

Strategy is paramount in PixelJunk #4. The piloted craft is susceptible to extremes of heat, so the player must be careful about the craft’s proximity to magma. If the craft becomes too hot, the player can regain a comfortable temperature by plunging into the nearest water source. Additionally, each stage presents a puzzle scenario for the player to solve in order to safely rescue as many survivors as possible. Both environmental elements and enemies, including Bosses, will attempt to hamper the player’s progress.

PixelJunk #4 is the fourth game in Q-Games’ PixelJunk series, which blends simple, addictive gameplay with crisp and attractive graphics designed for optimal viewing in full 1080p High Definition (HD)*.

  • Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy

Set in the near future, a Psi-Agent names Nick Scryer has his memory wiped and false memories implanted so that he can infiltrate a terrorist group known as "The Movement". Now believing he is an anti-terrorist soldier, he helps defend a facility from the Movement but is captured. Aided by a beautiful double agent named Sara, Nick escapes from his captors, begins to regain his Psi powers and fights to get closer to the truth surrounding this elusive secret society and the man who runs it, a U.S. Military rogue known only as "The General".

Nick must fight against not only the brainwashed super-soldier army of the Movement, but also against its Psi agents, each of which possess a potent Psi power of their own. Soon Nick realizes that his own Psi powers are boiling to the surface, and he must master them in order to defeat his enemies. Infiltrating deeper and deeper into the Movement's compounds, he is able to learn that his own fate is wrapped up with that of the General.

As he and Sara search for answers they uncover that the General's ultimate plan involves a mysterious ancient artifact known as the Monolith, an object that has played a major role in nearly every major historical event during the last 12 centuries. Why does the General want it, what is its power and why are so many dying to discover its secrets? To discover his own past, Nick must delve into the heart of the Movement to find out, confronting his past and delivering the world from a madman bent on gaining the power of a god.

The Psi powers are a key aspect to the gameplay in Psi-Ops and open up experiences not possible with traditional weapons only, especially given that our environments contain a huge number of objects (and enemies!) that the player can interact with. The combination of unique Psi powers, a great physics engine from Havok, allowing for highly-realistic body and object reactions, and highly interactive worlds allows players an almost infinite way to get by each challenge in the game.

Motion capture adds a subtle level of realism to a game that we wanted for Psi-Ops. Much like other visual and non-visual elements that make up games such as textures, geometry, lighting, sound effects, and particle effects, animations can have a strong impact on how realistic a game feels to a player. Since we wanted players to start in a realistic world and gradually have it change towards the fantastical, it was important that the initial impact of the game feel immersive, and motion capture was just one of the elements that help us achieve that. However, even later in the game, motion capture continues to give the character, even while they are using Psi powers a sense of realism that we feel makes them more believable and helps keep the player immersed in the action and story.
