The first Professor Layton title came out of nowhere. When Professor Layton and the Curious Village was released no one really knew what to expect, and everyone was impressed with what Nintendo and Level 5 had created. It was an assortment of puzzles tied together with a plot, something that wouldn't have been so entertaining if it wasn't done so damn well. The story and characters were incredibly charming, and the game had some of the best animated cutscenes on the handheld. When the game's instruction manual was cracked open, gamers were met with the promise of not only an entertaining game, but a another title within a year or so. As it turned out, Layton was nothing new in Japan, and a sequel was already released by the time the first game reached American shores. Now, finally, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box has been released, and should hold us over until we get the third game in the series. Then the fourth.

A police drama delves into the supernatural when a monstrous force threatens the world at the sub-cellular level. Based on the Japanese science fiction novel by Hideaki Sena, Parasite Eve features a science-fiction/horror story line told through incredible 3D computer graphic visuals; detailed film-quality story sequences blend seamlessly with the realistic gameplay environments. The motion-picture-style effects complement the intricate storyline based on a best-selling Japanese sci-fi novel.
The gamer assumes the role of Aya Brea, a young female cop on the NYPD faced with the task of defeating Eve, an evil entity representing the will of the mitochondria. (Mitochondria are micro-organisms with unique DNA that live and work symbiotically inside of human cells.) The game takes place entirely in New York City, with many backgrounds based on actual locations in the Big Apple. There, Aya must use her police training, weaponry, and latent "mitochondrial energy" to prevent Eve from destroying the human race. Like Final Fantasy VII, PE portrays Aya and other characters as 3D polygonal characters against beautiful static backgrounds. With PE, Square has opted to use more realistically proportioned characters than those found in FFVII, and the game's two CDs are packed with copious amounts of gorgeous full-motion video to advance the story.
Dracula's a tough fellow to pin down, so to speak, so it's no surprise that the popular Castlevania series has resurrected the nefarious guy nearly every year since the game's 1987 debut.
Legacy of Darkness is both a prequel and an update to the early 1999 release, Castlevania, for the Nintendo 64. Set eight years prior to its predecessor's narrative, the creepy story introduces a new main character, Cornell, a young gent who moonlights as a werewolf. Dracula's posse has kidnapped Cornell's younger sister, and the man-wolf must conquer a collection of enemies, including Dracula himself, to save her. In addition to Cornell's quest, players can experience entirely unique adventures from the viewpoint of three other characters, adding to the game's replayability.
With a slicker version of its precursor's game engine, Legacy of Darkness features improved graphics (bumped up even a few more notches via an optional high-resolution expansion pack) and redesigned puzzles and levels. Players navigate using a variety of gymnastic-style moves in the third person, with the camera following them from an over-the-shoulder view.
This game is definitely best enjoyed after a garlic-heavy dinner with the lights off and doors locked.
