Who would have thought that Disney Games would publish one of the best racing games of this generation? Sure, Pure was actually developed by Black Rock Studios, but Disney’s general contribution to the gaming market is Disney’s Extreme Sports: Skateboarding than anything worth paying attention to. Early reports about Pure were shockingly optimistic, calling it the SSX of ATV games and earning the game E3 awards, beating out the highly anticipated Motorstorm 2. After playing the demo I was pulled in by its high-octane something or other and convinced that I needed to have the game when it was released, and was not disappointed in the least.
The controls are tight, albeit unrealistic. Pure feels a lot more like an arcade game than its competition, and people who have trained themselves to react realistically to obstacles by oversteering might need to find a way to get over that hurdle before playing. For all the focus that’s been put on the game’s racing physics, the main focus of Pure is the tricks. Hitting the A button will execute a trick, which builds up your turbo boost meter. This can be used normally to gain speed, but can also be built up to unlock more air tricks, all of which can be tweaked by hitting the shoulder buttons. Holding B might have the rider holding the back of his seat, preforming a "Superman," and hitting the shoulder buttons will bring it up in an arch, turning it into a "Scorpion" for double points. These all add up and eventually allow the player to execute their character’s special trick, which is about as over-the-top as possible. Riders leap off their ATVs to do backflips while spinning uncontrollably through the air, use their seat as a pommel horse, or similar acts of foolishness. They are unrealistic, insane, and fantastic; adding to the game’s arcade feeling.
With authentic cars, courses, and car physics, Gran Turismo™ 4 adds an even more realistic racing simulation to the series. The characteristics of each car take into account weight, speed, friction, and more to deliver realistic handling. Test-drive new vehicles in courses located in various sites, such as Nurburgring Nordschleife, New York City, the Grand Canyon, and Tsukuba Circuit. Along with Career mode, Gran Turismo™ 4 highlights the new GT Photo mode.
Dare Devil Derby features six distinct single-player modes: Grand Prix - a series of ten races where players must finish in the top three to progress to the next track; World Series - a ten-race season where points are awarded for finishing position (a champ is crowned at the end of the season); Championship mode - a tournament where players race against one opponent on a variety of tracks; Knockout - a race against all other opponents where the last place finisher is eliminated from the competition; One on One - a race against each of the seven other characters, one at a time; and lastly Speed Trial - a one-lap race where the object is to break the track speed record. Pile on the seven different play modes for multiplayer contests, and this proves to be a very replayable game indeed.
Combining the action/adventure and racing genres, Chocobo Racing follows in the footsteps of popular "car-toon" titles Crash Team Racing and Mario Kart. While the cutesy bird character Chocobo lacks the mainstream notoriety of Mario or Crash, the kooky creature will likely appeal to fans of the popular Final Fantasy series. Chocobo makes a successful flight from sidekick to star in this quirky racer, which features seven competing cartoon characters including White Mage, Mog, and Golem.
All of the racing characters possess special powers and unique tracks designed around their personas. Chocobo Racing contains five challenging racing modes, including grand prix (four-track tournament), time attack, versus (two-player racing), relay race, and story mode. We were particularly intrigued by the story mode, which places Chocobo in an old-fashioned pop-up storybook as he aims to collect several scattered blue crystals.
We also liked the high replay value of this game. For example, a racing victory may reward players with the ability to customize a character. Chocobo Racing is far from a sophisticated racer--and, in fact, that is part of the appeal. This is an easy game to learn, so younger players can pick up a controller and play with little trouble. Still, plenty of challenges hide in the detailed tracks, which are filled with time-zapping traps and treacherous curves.
Harness the blurring speed of 11 ultra-realistic all terrain jet hover bikes. Feel the bone-smashing action of 19 treacherous obstacle-ridden environments including subterranean graveyards; ancient cities; alien worlds and the wildest most thrilling stunt tracks ever designed. Experience an all-new blazing fast 3D engine with realistic MotoPhysics handling. Jostle sideswipe and rip it up in 1-player and 2-player competition.
The third game in Debius Studio's Motocross Mania series, this value-minded release brings a markedly aggressive style of dirt-biking to Xbox and PS2. Players choose from a selection of ten rider characters (with another six that can be unlocked), then race in competitions where high-speed, hand-to-hand attacks against opponents can be as successful a tactic as skilled riding and brave stunts. Various melee-style weapons are available, to add even more power to the combat. The game features more than 20 tracks and a number of combat- and speed-oriented modes of play.
