NY Comic Con '08: Iron Man and Hulk Video Game Panel
Posted 7 months ago by 00.19

We are here to report just what Justin Lambrose, Jeffery Tseng, Mike McHale and BJ Enriquez have to say about Marvel's newest video games.

- They're putting out these games as new IPs, not just because there is a movie tie-in. It certainly helps when launching to have the tie-in, but these game properties will stand on their own.

- The different versions of the IRON MAN game are developed by different companies (360 and PS3 by Secret Level, all other platforms by A2M).

- Iron Man's abilities were a great challenge as well as a great opportunity for the developer.

- The style and themes from the movie were a building block for where they wanted to take the game.

- Splitting up the development between different studios enabled each platform to get the attention they deserved.

- The Wii-mote is used to aim directly at enemies and punch them.

- The audience has certain expectations the developers are aware of, and they wanted you to get as much from you experience playing as Iron Man as possible.

- Robert Downey, Jr was involved with making sure the in-game Tony Stark had the same voice and feel as his portrayal in the film.

- A lot of games have captured flying characters with varying success, but they feel they've really gotten down the mechanics in such a huge space.

- The current-gen systems will have some constaints in how much flying they will be able to enjoy. The DS version is heavily influenced by ROBTOTRON.

-  The INCREDIBLE HULK game was developed by Edge of Reallity for every system except DS, which was developed by Amaze.

- They wanted to get across a feel for the most destruction you could have to an incredible degree.

- The game is a spiritual successor to ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION.

- There are familiar elements from the film in the game, but just basing the game on the movie would not be enough. They've added a bunch more characters and different story angles to spice up the game.

- They changed some character designs to make them look cooler (Bi-Beast).

- The cast will lend their likenesses and voices to the game.

- We asked whether or not we would see different HULK skins in the game. We can expect to see a Grey Hulk alternate skin in the game. Without giving too much away, BJ did manage to relay that if we knew the different Hulks from top, seminal runs on the title, we could expect to see those in the game as well. BJ also alluded to some faces from other Marvel related Sega games making an appearance. They also added there would be more characters only in the DS version.

- There are some choices you can make which are more heroic than the other that lead to diffences in the way IRON MAN will play.

- Due to the limited amount of time with each actor, much of the voiceovers will be used cross-generationally.

- There will no PSP version of the HULK game simply due to time constraints. Instead of "crapping one out", they chose to focus on making a solid experience on the platforms the game will be available on.

- Will there be a red skinned Hulk (the current version)? "If everyone rushes the stage right now, I'll put red skin Hulk in." No one rushed the stage.

- IRON MAN wil save per mission. HULK will reportedly allow you to save at any time during gameplay as long as you aren't mid-mission.

- There will be some cool classic battle related acheivements in the games.

- Hulk will be able to take down entire buildings.

- We ask if we can expect a Marvel fighting game, especially now that DC and Mortal Kombat are fighting. No fighting title in the works right now. Even though the EA partnership has lapsed, that shouldn't stop Marvel from continuing to make those types of games. Hopefully by NYCC of 2009 they will have an announcment to make.

- They do plan to tie in some elements from "World War Hulk" into the HULK game.

That wraps this panel. Stay tuned for more updates on the rest of New York Comic Con 2008 both here and at TheQuarterbin.com
