A Fight Never Finished
Posted 7 months, 3 weeks ago by Bunker Buster

Now for the select few that have played the game, I give a salute to the few and the proud. Now, I too am part of that group, but the sad thing is that, well, we're few.

Freedom Fighters, released on the Xbox & PS2, was a simple-yet-fun third person shooter that contained a very simple, but very effective, command system. The controls were easy to grasp, the varying degrees of difficulties and hidden spots made the game certainly re-playable, the music was powerful, and the story was deep and quite immersive, involving a Soviet invasion of New York City in an history-altered 2001. You might've heard of Turning Point: Fall of Liberty and its similar story, but I personally think that's it's a perfect example of a good idea never really taking off. Freedom Fighters also contained a pretty fun multiplayer component as well, with a fun bunker system. However, I wouldn't hold anything against you if you wanted to play Halo 2 instead.

If there's anyone that I can hold anything against, it's Io Interactive for leaving the game open for a sequel that may not be coming. Taking its place, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men seemed like a worthy replacement for Freedom Fighters 2, but things turned sour when a huge controversy challenged the trust and reliability of all game reviews and reviewers. Not only that, but Kane & Lynch, at its heart, just wasn't that spectacular to begin with. The story was deep, and the multiplayer was enjoyable, but it just didn't live up to expectations and the large marketing blitz the came shortly before it.

Freedom Fighters is a little gem among the gaming library. It may not shine as brightly as the others, but it sure as hell shines pretty bright. The game was truly underrated, even by its developers. If you ever see this at a gaming store, make sure to pick it up, and don't worry about having to plug in your Xbox. It's supported by the 360. I'm not too sure about the PS3.

A sequel was supposed to happen about two years ago. Eidos was going to publish it themselves instead of EA, but it apparently fell apart. It's allegedly still on the Eidos "to-do-list," so that's something, I guess.

I loved this game. I also hoped that Kane & Lynch was going to recreate the same enjoyment I got from Freedom Fighters, but it never really clicked. Hopefully FF will get a next-gen sequel.
