- Madden Buyers Guide
- Posted 17 months ago by Coop
I don’t feel the need to review Madden in the traditional sense: what’s the point? Instead I have put together this handy guide to figure out if the newest Madden is for you.
The most recent version is a large leap from 2007 compared to the other incremental upgrades the Madden series has seen. It adds multi-player tackles (which look as cool as they should) and a boatload of statistical upgrades to make the game a much deeper experience. They even started to animate facial expressions of players. Gone are the days of stoic stares during the Superbowl, here are the days of mild grins during the same time. They are far from BioShock here, but it is good to see an update.
But is it worth buying?
First of all you need to ask yourself: Do you like Madden?
If so continue, if not you might as well leave now. Mutant League Football for the Sega Genesis is calling you. There is nothing in this game that would bring a Madden hater to the other side.
Now the more important question: what version to buy. This is all a matter of preference. Going by stats the Xbox360 version of Madden 2008 is the best one. It runs at a smooth 60 frames per second and has all of the features of the other versions.
The PS3 version is unnecessarily gimped at 30FPS. This can lead to some choppiness and less fluid animations. However if you are like many people who simply want an excuse to turn on your PS3 go ahead, by all means by that version.
The graphics are not good enough to justify buying a new system for it either. I wouldn’t recommend trading in your Xbox or PS2 for a new system if Madden is on your mind because you will be very disappointed.
Hopefully this will help you make your mind up about Madden. It isn’t groundbreaking but it is fun. Will you buy it anyway? Or will you be like me and wait for the promise that EA had for gamers a few years ago:

Yeah... isn't Owens on, like, a different team now?
Don't forget, that video was released during the current generation of consoles. They must have been talking about the next generation. As good as '08 is, it ain't close to that McNabb/Owens footage.
