Those Were the Days: A Diablo Obsession Remembered
Posted 4 months, 3 weeks ago by Coop

Those Were the Days is a new weekly article in which Gamervision employees share video game-related memories. If you’ve got a story of your own to share, please do so! We love hearing from the community.

People keep asking me why I’m excited for Too Human despite generally low review scores and a less-than-amazing demo. Most of the people don’t understand what I could possibly see in a title with simplistic gameplay, unimpressive graphics, and seemingly random loot.

Well, to be honest, that’s exactly what I see in it. Confused? You must have never played Diablo II.

I used to wake up at 5:00am when I was in Jr. High School to do Mephisto runs on my Magic-Find Barbarian, maphacking my way through the Durance of Hate and killing the boss with my two Dual-Isted Ali Baba blades, before popping out to kill the Tranvical. I would come home from school and sign onto Battlenet and level up my Javazon or Necromancer, trying to make a character that could clear Hell Cows solo to find ethereal Titans or anything worth a few SOJs. One time while wandering around an empty game I found an unidentified Gladiator’s Bane on the ground of a cleared out Cow Level, which is still a story I tell to fans of the game.

If you’re confused by all of this then I promise you missed out, because Diablo II online, despite having a broken economy based on unique rings, a community comprised of mostly idiotic children, and awful lag was one of the best gaming experiences, well, ever.

I was hardcore addicted (but not to the hardcore servers, LOL!?@1), and so were all of my friends. The combat was simple, so you didn’t need to overexert your mind while playing. The fun wasn’t in finding unique ways to kill bosses, but doing it over and over again to find the best loot possible. It’s an experience that has yet to be matched by any game, and a magic that Blizzard wasn’t able to tap in to for World of Warcraft, despite obviously trying. There were different variations of every item you could think of and it could come in different versions and have a different number of sockets for customization. The game had so much to find it was impossible to ever find it all, but that didn’t stop me from trying.

I even picked up the addiction again about a year ago, trying to play with the new enhancements to the game with the still bustling online community. Diablo III being announced, to me, would be like Whitney Houston hearing that they had developed a new type of cocaine. Playing a game with this much customization online is just so much fun, and with Diablo III years away I need to take what I can get, and if Too Human is going to be an average game with simple gameplay, simple graphics, online co-op, and crazy customization than count me in. Why? Because it's like Diablo II, and Diablo II was one of the best games ever.

Man, this reminds me of my short-lived (but much enjoyed) Warcraft III days. Good times.
