Top Ten Reasons to Own a PS3
Posted 4 months, 4 weeks ago by Coop

I’m sick and tired of people complaining about the “Console Wars.” Sure, it was good and fun when I was seven, but hearing people write off the Wii as a “child’s toy” or say that there isn’t anything worth buying on the PlayStation 3 is annoying and I am sick of the ignorance. So I have taken it upon myself to go through all of the current generation (consoles and handhelds) and give the ten best reasons each one is worth owning.

The list isn't in any real order, more of a "loose order," so before you're at my throat about something being number two when it should really be number three realize that these aren't in any real order, just sort of ascending in importance.

10. Warhawk
Incognito’s PlayStation 3 exclusive online-only shooter offers an experience unmatched on the Xbox 360 or Wii. 32-player online battles across huge landscapes in various different vehicles is an impressive feat for a console to handle, and allowing up to four players to jump online with one system makes it an achievement in technological prowess.

9. Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance didn’t live up to the photorealistic promises of the early PlayStation 3 commercials, but the launch title was definitely the best among the early PlayStation 3 releases. The story was there, and the game’s unique enemies and weapons were enough to gain the game an online following, leading to hectic multiplayer battles. The game’s sequel is coming soon, and looks to follow in the original’s footsteps while adding a huge amount of polish, so the time is right to jump on board and give Resistance a play-through.

8. PlayStation Store Games

No, the PlayStation store doesn’t have anything that compares to Braid or Geometry Wars 2, but it does have enough content to spend more than a few weeks playing through the downloadable games. Titles like Pain, Pixeljunk Monsters, Pixeljunk Eden, and Super Stardust HD are great distractions. Siren and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue offer full game experiences that you can download right onto your hard drive.

7. Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Destruction
It’s shocking that Insomniac Games was able to pull off two amazing games within a few months of the PlayStation 3’s release, and Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Destruction trumps most of the previous titles in the Ratchet and Clank series. The graphics are amazing, rivaling some of the best animated movies, and the game’s plot and voice acting make the game worth checking out.

6. PSN is Free
Um, yeah. You can play games online, like on Xbox Live, but you don’t need to pay any money, unlike Xbox Live. It may not have all of the bells and whistles of the 360’s online service, but it’s free, and it works, so it’s awesome.

5. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Uncharted is already one of the best games of this generation, with a movie-quality plot and some of the best voice acting in gaming history. I know I seem to be rambling about presentation and polish for a lot of these games, but that’s because developers spend a lot of time with presentation and polish when developing PS3 games. It gets a little wonky at the end, but wraps up well and is a game worth playing several times through.

4. Metal Gear Solid 4

The first game to actually move PlayStation 3 systems was Metal Gear Solid 4, pushing it ahead of the Xbox 360 for two full months. There’s a reason for this – Metal Gear Solid 4 is an amazing title. Even for an admitted hater of the series, MGS4 succeeded any expectations I had for the title, launching it from a game I was ready to forget to a game I couldn’t.

3. Hardware
The PlayStation 3 is the most powerful video game system by far, with the Cell Processor and Blu Ray drive. Not only that, but it comes with a hard drive built in, and Sony has no problem letting developers take advantage of their system’s unique features to make a good game. While some developers are abusing this aspect, others use it to create experiences that couldn’t be developed for the Xbox 360 or Wii, and the system’s hardware gives it a leg up on the competition.

2. Blu-Ray

As the cheapest Blu-Ray player that has a built in internet connection and hard drive, the PlayStation 3 should be purchased by anyone with a high-definition television. HD-DVD has lost, and the next format is Blu Ray. While the king of High-Def might eventually go to digital, it is currently in Sony’s corner, and until that changes the PS3 is worth purchasing for that alone.

1. Future

LittleBigPlanet, God of War 3, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, and Motorstorm 2 are all on the horizon. More and more companies are finally throwing their support hehind the system, and while it doesn’t have as many exclusives as it’s competition the ones it has are quality, and the future is bright for the PS3.

Ninja, you can't add the HDD separately, because the $400 version came with one. Not only that, but some of us have hardwired connections, so saying that it's a needed addition is crazy, some of us were perfectly happy with a wire. Saying the failure rate is still 30% is also not true, so don't go believing that. Early on, yeah, it was somewhere near there. Now its about 10%, which is still too high, but far from 30%.

I like what's on the list. I, like Ninjapino, am a PS fanboy. The first things I check out when I go online are PS3 Fanboy and PSP Fanboy. Then I come to Gamervision and check my email.

Once done with that I check out any new games on their respective sites and look into new anime and news in the world.

Those that have read my previous stuff, probably know by now that I am a huge PS fanboy. I finally bought a 360 and, of course, I have problems with it. No video, just audio. I bought it from somebody else (and it worked at first) so, I don't have the warrenty. Plus, I don't want to pay $100 more to get it fixed someplace. I tried the x-clamp trick and it still doesn't work. Spent all weekend and more money then I'd have liked to, too. With a 30% failure rate, no free Live, no bluetooth, and only a few games that I care about that aren't multiplatform, I always thought of the PS3 as the superior machine. Originally, the 360 cost around $400 and the PS3 was around $600. Then you add on the wireless network adapter (around $100) and an HDD (another $100), and it's the same price, but still not as powerful! On top of that, the PS3 has blu-ray. The 360 equivalent, if it had succeeded, was $200. I'm sticking with my PS3 for now. I'll let you know if I ever get the 360 running.

I do tend to go with 360 purchases when it comes to games released for both consoles, but I still love my PS3. I'm really glad I have it, and don't remember how I got along without it.

I feel like I'm not the only one who's right on the edge of buying a ps3, but can't quite do it. Yes, I want to play the exclusive games, and yes, i want the cheapest/best blu-ray player on the market, and yes, the games that use that engine to its fullest look spectacular.

But I get so much play time out of my 360 and even my wii that I just can't justify bringing another console to the playgroup. Maybe littlebigplanet will be enough or maybe god of war 3......we'll see i guess.

I love my PS3, but I find myself constantly playing my 360. I agree with everything you say in this article....but i still find myself buying games for my 360 when they are multi-platform. Maybe its the achievements, maybe its the fact that I have been burned before.....who knows.

yay ps3! a dedicated nintendo fanboy (fangirl?), i was quickly won over when the ps3 made an appearance in our home. first off, it runs SO QUIETLY, which is a huge bonus for any house with multiple people in it who may not all want to play at the same time. secondly, i love the controller. i know the xbox tends to be the crowd favorite in this area but to me the ps3 controller feels the way game controllers should feel, with or without the rumble.

I really, really, REALLY want a Playstation 3.

I just feel like it is alot of money to spend on something I'm only going to use for a few games.
