Guitar Hero: On Tour Revealed
Posted 9 months, 3 weeks ago by Coop

IGN has the exclusive first look at what most be the most awkward expansion to the Guitar Hero franchise imaginable. As reported on a few months back, Activision has been developing a handheld port of the popular franchise entitled Guitar Hero: On Tour. The game would take the rock artist experience to a portable level, and the developers said in the past that gamers should expect an attachment to the DS to play it.

They weren’t lying, and the image is below.

Oh. Hell. Yes.

This actually gets me more excited for the title then I imagined I could be. It means Activision is taking a chance, and not just throwing a half-assed port onto the system. This is an entirely new experience that you can only get with this title – something that even Guitar Hero III cannot claim. There is a trailer showing the game in action located below, but for those too lazy to look here is the run down.

Your hand fits through the back, holding four colored buttons and the system. In that holder there is a guitar pick, which is used to replicate the strum bar on the touch screen. The remaining screen streams the notes, in typical Guitar Hero fashion, and the gameplay should be self explanatory from there.

As expected, the title will feature local wireless play with multiple copies of the game, with either co-operative or competitive play. IGN detailed the battle mode, which sounds infinitely cooler then its console counterpart.

“The game's battle mode will feature similar gameplay as the mode created in Guitar Hero III, with power-ups created specifically for Guitar Hero: On Tour. For example, players can activate power-ups that'll send raving fans to the other screen, and the opponent will have to sign autographs on the touchscreen to get rid of them. Or out-of-control pyrotechnics will be set ablaze, and players will have to blow them out using the Nintendo DS microphone.”

For as silly as the thing looks, you have to give it to Vicarious Visions, the developer handling the title, for having the balls to do it like they are. There will be at least 20 licensed tracks by artists like Nirvana and No Doubt, and it is currently on track for a summer release.

We are trying to get in contact with the developers for more information as I try to convince everyone at Gamervision that this is indeed cool, as opposed to lame.

That looks awesome! Just too bad that I don't have a DS anymore.

I'm not in love with this design. It looks like the most uncomfortable game to actually play. Like, you have to bend your wrist around, and use the stylus?

Maybe, but probably not...

The fact of the matter is that you're going to get sick of those 20 songs real fast, and unless you keep shelling out for the next iteration, well....

Just wait for Rock Band DS.. you'll see!!!!

It's crazy that they thought this up, I don't know what else to say but I'm amazed.

man i hope there's going to be a lefty-flip option...i can't hold the stylus in my left hand without it feeling really unnatural.

I think the decision to take out the fifth button was a smart one. You'll agree with this if you've tried playing Jam Session. It was darn near impossible to strum on the touch screen, imagine that difficulty combined with having to shift hand positions on the DS to cover that orange button. No doubt a lot of frustration went into getting the design perfect. Just don't pull a Hendrix and burn your DS after you finish rockin'...

I'll admit, it looks better than I ever thought it would have. I figured Activision was going to make some kind of half-assed port and milk the GH license for all it was worth. But this is interesting. Still, the lack of a fifth button for harder gameplay makes me wonder how long it will keep me occupied.
