- Halo 3 Recon: Details Arise
- Posted About 1 month ago by Coop

Bungie's next shooter, Halo 3: Recon, is leaving many gamers drooling in anticipation. Details have been scarce - details Bungie likes keeping under their hat (or helmet), and so far only the setting is known. I'll admit, I'm excited for the game, but I sort of expected a run-of-the-mill shooter set on Earth, taking advantage of Halo 3 fans one last time this generation. It seems Bungie isn't about to drop down to that level, and plans something much bigger for their next title.
According to Game Informer [via CVG], Recon will be an open world shooter set in New Mombasa after the events of Halo 2. Players assume the role of "The Rookie," a typical silent hero attempting to find his squad mates who have crash-landed in different areas of the city. After reuniting with each of the four remaining soldiers, players take control of them, learning what sequence of events took place to land them where they ended up. Different characters have their own set of skills and abilities (like a sniper or a heavy-weapons expert) like the Call of Duty 4 campaign, and each will have its own half-hour or so level.
The tactics of the game will also be different, favoring a slower, more careful experience. ODST soldiers don't have shields like Master Chief and need to be much more tactical about taking down larger groups of enemies, who will prove faster and more powerful than they might have seemed in previous games. Still no word on how cooperative play will work in, but I'm sure we'll hear more on that soon.
I know some people will bash this news, complaining about being tired of open world shooters, but give it a chance, lets see how Bungie handles creating a city. The later levels of Halo 3 were fairly epic, and I'm sure they have some tricks up their sleeves, as well as some multiplayer enhancements. We’ll have more news as it develops, but as of now, keep it clean, folks.

I hear ya, I just found it funny! =)
i love the innovation to the game, it truly does try something different. The reason I am hating on Mirror's Edge is because of length of the single player and from what i perceive to be a lack of online options. I have played the game and i would give it a rental but i do not feel its worth 60 bucks. So i was not hating on it just saying i don't think its worth a purchase in my case because i don't feel i would get my 60 dollars worth of the game. But i have been loving Valkyria Chronicles, LittleBigPlanet, Pixeljunk Eden, Linger in Shadows, and other such innovative games.
Pshhh, you've been hating on Mirror's Edge since the demo came out, and that game is absolutely innovative!
everyone screaming for it i dont think is ignoring it. But those innovative games get lost in the spotlight of some of these bigger, less interesting and in some cases worse games that are hitting the shelf.
Nice!
Everyone screams "innovate" and ignores innovative games. Funny.
I like the idea of an MGS-style Halo.
Hmm... no shields. This will be interesting! An almost MGS-like Halo comes to mind. I'm willing to give that a shot.
I'll rejoice when this comes out. Then maybe all those little kids and retarded adults who I see jumping around in my CoD matches like they're on the moon will go back where they belong. On Halo.
i agree with you on that Jpage and HeyKid. Innovate, Innovate, Innovate. Yes its ok to incorporate things from a previous game that are popular, but please dont just copy and paste the entire game, ala the Halo franchise.
I cant stand Halo. The first one was good, but the sequels have really brought nothing but hype. The single player campaigns are so freaking short, and the story in 3 was lacking big-time. The rehashed textures and environments leave me feeling like I've never left the first level.
Ultimately I feel that this is the Fable of the first-person genre. It gets way too much hype, and in the end it isn't anything it should have been. I only got the first game because I wanted the green xbox, haha. Since then I haven't been impressed.
Unless Recon is going to drastically reinvent the Halo series and provide some new thrills, I really could care less. Halo 2 was more Halo 1.5. I think I can live without Halo 3.5.
I will keep an open mind on this. Halo has really gone downhill in my eyes since the first one as i think they really haven't expanded upon the greatness that i believe was Halo 1. I have hopes that this one will try some new things and really bring a breath of fresh air to the Halo world.
:)
