- Harmonix Developer Wants User Generated Rock

Rock Band has brought great success to Harmonix, but in their journey to make sure gamers love them as much as possible they still have plenty ideas. One thought is being able to create your own music with the faux-instruments included in the $179 bundle. No, that isn’t the same as angrily bashing your broken guitar over your broken step-pedal (that’s just part of being a rock star), and no, it isn’t the same as making up your own, drunken lyrics to "Dead or Alive."
Apparently, the idea isn’t beyond the realm of imagination, as Harmonix’ Gred LoPiccilo shares these same thoughts. This is the final nail in the coffin, people; legitimate musicians will never take us seriously now.
“We would like to make it possible for people to introduce their own music into the Rock Band ecosystem, which is a pretty complicated topic.
It isn't easy to achieve - there are IP issues, ratings issues, and so forth. So there are a lot of things to work through to get that to work, but that seems like a natural direction for the franchise to move.
We'd love to have it be a vehicle for people to be able to express themselves in terms of creating their own music and bringing it to a wider audience."
I’d like to see where this is going, but I highly doubt anything will come of it. It goes right along with the idea of being able to plug an iPod into your system and upload music to play – a novel idea that would detract from their profits.
In the meantime, Harmonix should stick to making sure nothing stands between me and playing "Still Alive" when it is available. That would be a problem.
