Mario Kart Wii’s Chat Support Sucks
Posted 10 months, 2 weeks ago by Coop

Yesterday, Gamervision reported that Mario Kart Wii would support text chat in the lobbies of games being created. We laughed and joked about how stuck in the past Nintendo was, not even allowing voice chat in their upcoming racer. Apparently we were more wrong then we knew, as IGN has amended their initial claim about text chat to, instead, be even more archaic:

“In our original article, we speculated that players might be able to use a USB keyboard or at the very least the Wii remote to enter customized text messages. Not so, according to a rep for Nintendo of America, who contacted us today to clarify. Apparently, gamers will only be able to select from a pre-determined number of phrases that can be sent along as rudimentary texts before matches. Nintendo is clearly playing it safe.”
A set of phrases predetermined when playing with even friends? There isn’t even a “Welcome to the Last Generation” joke for that; no online plan has ever offered such little communication ability. If Nintendo ever wants anyone to take their online gaming seriously they need to at least allow for rudimentary texting support.

Even on some of their Nintendo DS titles they allow for voice chat in-between games, what is the deal? Nintendo has to realize that there is a difference between “playing it safe” and detracting from gameplay. Sure, chatting has never been a part of Mario Kart in the past, but not every person who picks up a Wiimote is under the age of ten. Pre-determined phrases are an abomination and Nintendo should be ashamed.

Then again, we are ignoring the possibilities that the “pre-determined” phrases could be awesome. I have put together a list of what they may be based on research and insider information:

  • Hello!
  • Ouch!
  • Look out!
  • Good game!
  • Thanks!
  • Wow, that was fun!
  • I win!
  • Good job!
  • Screw you, douche bag! What the hell was that shit with the blue shell and don’t get me starting on snaking you jackass! I WILL KILL YOU.
  • Want to play again?
  • Join the Nintendo Club Today, Mac!
  • Yay!

Here is the task of every gamer on earth: We will choose a code language.

For instance

"Good game" means "good game" but
"Maybe next time" means "Die, you stupid noob!"

We just have to standardize the code with everyone we know, and the damge will be done!

It gets harder and harder to stridently defend the Wii with each passing day.

What.... the... fuck?

Hell, the Dreamcast had better chat options.

Hell, Sega-fucking-Saturn had better chat options on its SegaNet 36.6kbps modem.

I mean, I guess it's better than Mario Strikers Charged that features NO communication whatsoever.

I am ashamed for all Wii-kind.
