- Snake too Big for Blu-Ray?
- Posted 10 months, 1 weeks ago by Coop
Every day that goes by without Metal Gear Solid 4 being confirmed for the Xbox 360 a fanboy dies. There are plenty of reasons that make both sides of the argument plausible. One the one side, nearly every other Metal Gear Solid title has been ported to another system. On the other side, Hideo Kojima has said like, twenty times that it is a Playstation 3 exclusive.
Now there is another quote to throw into the debates: Hideo Kojima has stated that even the 50 gigabyte Blu-Ray disk isn’t large enough for all of the content that Metal Gear Solid 4 is prepared to give gamers this June. According to an interview written in crazy, incomprehensible scribbles located here, he states that content had to be cut from the final version of the game due to size restrictions. I’d like to go on record and call his claims frivolous and ring the official “bullshit” bell.
I have a hard time believing that they had that much of a problem getting the game to fit onto a 50 gig Blu-Ray disk. This goes back to the claims that came when the PS3 launched, with developers blatantly lying and saying that they filled the disk to the brim. The same happened a few months back when Ninja Theory tried to convince the gaming community that Heavenly Sword had something like 10 gigabytes of audio.
Companies seem to be involved in some sort of stupid arms race to see who can use the increased size limit the best, when in reality it seems more like they are just being lazy and refusing to compress stuff. Mass Effect is completely packed with dialogue and Bioware never complained about the DVD size, I don’t know why all of these companies seem to be having problems fitting their games onto a Blu-Ray.
Unless there is something huge they haven’t announced, I expect hackers to crack the disk open a few days after launch and reveal a dozen gigs of nothingness in-between fourty hours of cinematics.

Considering Half Life 2 is less than 5 GB, color me impressed.
Probably just means they didn't reuse many textures, and have a lot of uncompressed audio.
oh Coop, I always enjoy reading your articles XD
Why is multiple discs such a big sin anyway? I didn't mind getting off my couch to swap the CDs once every MGS1 playthrough.
