![]() This game has got to be one of the best games I ever played. The first thing that blew me away was the game's incredible graphics. Situated in a vast and empty landscape, you and your noble steed track down gigantic creatures of acient myth. With its fantastic visuals and atmospheric surroundings, Shadow of the Colossus radiates beauty and artistic genius. ![]() Whats best about SOTC is the Colossi. Towering giants that are each different in apperance and size, wander the empty land with earth shaking footsteps. Each Colossus has its own personality, size, attack and structure. Making each battle a different experience. When first approaching the Colossus, a great feeling of perspective and size is evedent when looking at the towering giant. With its slow fluid motion and thundering footsteps that shake the earth, can only be succeeded by the games fantastic graphics and lighting effects. And then you say to yourself: "How the hell am I going to defeat this thing". ![]() The real challenge of the game is figuring out how to defeat the Colossi, each of which is unique in its own way. Your sword and bow are indispensable tools in the appropriate situations, but your most important weapon against the great beasts is your wits, which you'll need to use in full to puzzle out the right way to defeat each Colossus without being ground under one massive heel after another. In fact, Shadow of the Colossus feels almost as much like a puzzle game as it does an action game, or an adventure, since you'll frequently have to make creative use of both the environment and your weapons just to reach a monster's weak points, much less strike at these points effectively to bring it down. There is a bit of repetitiveness while killing the different colossi, but its not too noticeable as each Colossus is different. ![]() The only bad things I can say about this game is that the map isn't detailed enough and the camera angles can sometimes frustrate. However, this does not ruin the gaming experience. With A1 graphics, superb gameplay and outstanding imagination, this is a PlayStation 2 title that no PlayStation 2 owner should be without. If you liked the visuals and gameplay of Ico, then this is a game for you. A true classic that will echo in gaming history. ![]() Note: The end of the game almost brings a tear to the eye. Quite sad. |

Part of your review is obscured by the comments field, so I dunno if you mentioned this, but the soundtrack for this game (composed by Kow Otani) is among the best I've heard. It's fantastic, powerful, heart-wrenching and simply beautiful. It made me cry at the end.
And I agree with your review. This game is one of the best out there. In fact it's so much more than a game - it's an experience.
I love the water effects too. Especially when swimming in the eerie dark water. Lighting is great, the level where you fight the Colossus thats afraid of fire shows it best. That battle was terrifying.
Yeah, that'd be great. :) I'd have to agree with my friend on the lighting. It looks magnificent for a PS2 title and reminds me of HDR on newer PC titles.
It would be great to see a sequel on the PS3. Or even a blockbusting movie.
My friend showed me the game recently.
It has an excellent storyline but I wasn't too fond of the low res textures. It ruins the feeling of grandeur but still manages to pull through with an epic feeling due to the Colossi. The developers did a good job with pushing the PS2 to its limits though itd be great to see this in high res.
