Magister Debello

But, too late, I saw him.
I saw death leave his hands.
I remember...

I was once a boy
Who dreamed of being a man.
        Armor-clad, Honor-bound.
        With amber shielded eyes,.
        Spartan furious might
        Married to Athenian cunning.
An empire in a mortal frame.

I was once a man
Who dreamed of being a god -
A rifle sparks my lighting bolt.
        I envisioned my place on a throne;
Praised for power, and loved for grace.

Trained young,
Chosen to be a master over all soldiers.
Immortal in my own way -
Through my promise.
A covenant to myself; forever to be men's savior
        What flooded forth from Hell
        My hand would cast asunder
        A killing spree would commence,
Impure souls would form heaven's incense
Charred skulls would form my laurel crown

But, too late, I saw him.
I saw death leave his hands.
It sailed through the air as a ghost
Pale whispering wraiths floated behind,
Converging with my chest -
Come to carry my soul back.

In a flash of cerulean waves
Intercepted plasma grenade left its wake
I've lived for other's sakes
I've fallen for those I saved.

With a final radiant blue roar,
My life thread was cut short by Furious gods.
But somehow, as my chest flares to a molten core
I wonder if my troops have truly seen me
Climb Mount Olympus,
Or will death make me but a man.
