- Blu-Ray Outsells HD-DVD Nearly 2-1
- Posted 10 months, 2 weeks ago by Joe

The numbers game continues. Reuters is reporting that in the last nine months, Blu-Ray DVD titles have outsold HD DVD titles nearly 2 to 1. The actual figures are 2.6 million Blu-Ray units sold, as compared to 1.4 million HD DVD units. The total number since the introduction of both formats in 2006 are 3.01 million Blu-Ray discs, and 1.97 million HD DVD discs.
These numbers were reported before the release of the HD DVD exclusive Transformers, whose 100,000+ sales will definitely have an impact. Although, Spider-Man 3 and the Spider-Man Box set will be released on October 31st, exclusive to Blu-Ray. In the meantime, the real numbers are still behind regular DVD, and it could be a while before any definitive winner starts to emerge.
I don't like conflict. I prefer knowing that the product I invest money in is going to have a life span longer than a fruit fly. I have jumped on the Blu-Ray band wagon with the purchase of a PS3. With the PS3 price drop, more and more gamers could start to pick up Blu-Ray discs to take full advantage of their new Sony "media center". [Gizmodo, Reuters]

78's, 33,s, 45's, four track tapes, reel to reel, cassette tapes, Beta-max, TRS-80, Blu-ray.....?
Superior picture, larger capacity, plenty of support. Sony has got a winner on their hands with this one. The "Format War" is over.
BetaMax is the winner... oh wait.
I agree joe, who wants too spend an extra 200$ on an external DVD plyaer? i think that's kinda the reason Sony' doing well with Blue-ray, its in the system. If only they started making games for it....
HeyKidNiceRobot, no it wouldn't... They would only people to sell to people that either have the new 360 or the External player, and I don't know anyone who has that.
If Microsoft would be able to get an HD-DVD player in the Xbox 360, it wouldn't only help sell movie discs, but it would also free up developers to create larger games.
The only thing slowing Blu Ray down is the price ouch.....
well, at sonys rate, they're not going to be able to afford to get a PS3 in every household. Thats the set back that they'll be facing.
Based on Sony's implementation of Blu-Ray in their PS3, I believe Blu-Ray will win the "format war." Think about it: If you own a PS3, it already has a Blu-Ray player built-in. Would you even bother buying an HD-DVD player if you can play movies in HD on your PS3?
If not, Blu-Ray is still a better choice because there is more support for Blu-Ray from the movie companies and retailers. It's almost a no-brainer: Blu-Ray will almost certainly win in the long run.
