Next Generation Interview With Valve's Gabe Newell
Posted 10 months, 4 weeks ago by Joe

Gabe Newell recently sat down with Next Generation to discuss the recently released Orange Box and everything else Valve. On the topic of the much delayed PS3 version of The Orange Box, Newell had this to say:

I think [PS3 is] a waste of everybody’s time. Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There’s nothing there that you’re going to apply to anything else. You’re not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they’ve created. I don’t think they’re going to make money off their box. I don’t think it’s a good solution.

Yikes. He also mentions that the PS3 version is being outsourced to EA, but that, "the people who have The Orange Box on the PS3 are going to be happy with their game experience". Wasn't it EA who couldn't seem to get Madden '07 up to 60fps?

I wanted to pick up The Orange Box on PS3, but after all the delays, there was no way I was going to wait until December to play Portal. Just for the record, Portal is one of the coolest gaming experiences I have had in a long time, definitely check it out.

If Xbox can make their systems not Blow up (3 red rings of doom), then they have a perfect system pretty much. If PS3 would lwoer the price and get soem good games for it come out, then they can start to compete.

I definitely agree with the technical conundrum that Mr. Newell describes here, although I wouldn't say it's wholly a "waste of everybody's time." While the limitations of the Cell are as obvious as a hippie at a slayer show, I think what this interview shows is the difficulty that many developers are having with making games for the PS3, especially in the case of multi-platformed games. Simply put, it's easier and cheaper to get the desired end result (especially in terms of visual aesthetics) by going with the 360 than with the PS3.

However, the reason why the PS3 is not a waste of time is the same reason that the GameCube was not a waste of time: its strength lies in the exclusives. Of course, the glaring difference in this comparison is that Nintendo had a plethora of exclusives, while the PS3 only has a small handful of exclusives (also, the GameCube had tons of first-party support while the Sony has virtually nil).

If the big names in the industry were more comfortable with pledging allegiance to Sony's monolithic box, more developers would be making excellent PS3 exclusives that can be tailor-made to the system and take advantage of its power. Say what you will about Lair (which was a gorgeous looking game no matter how you slice it), but Factor 5 loved the sheer power of the Cell (http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=15802). Their only gripe was that there simply was not enough time to work with it. That gripe, though, is the bane of the PS3's existence. After all, time is money and developers and publishers are typically going to be reluctant to put in years of development and funding for a system that has yet to truly "prove" itself when the same game could be made faster and cheaper (and, in most cases, prettier) on the 360.

That's just my opinion, though.
