Update: Wii in HD...that's unpossible
Posted 8 months ago by Jozzy V1

Earlier in the year, I wrote an article about using a High-Def receiver to upconvert the video signal of the Nintendo Wii. After recently purchasing one of these receivers and fooling around with it, I've decided to give you the scoop on how well it works.

I purchased the Harmon Kardan AVR-247 High-Def video receiver. This is Harmon Kardan's entry level upconvert video receiver, starting at about $500. Setup was fairly easy, what with everything being color coded and everything, but it took some time to figure out how to transfer my audio signals correctly, because the manual was little to no help at all. After getting everything plugged in I immediately turned on my Wii to see if it made a difference.

My Wii definitely looks better on my HDTV than it did before. Colors are more vibrant and make the picture stand out more. The jaggies, while still very noticeable, have been greatly reduced, and are less noticeable the further away you sit from the TV. I'm basically on top of my TV when I play games, so I still noticed them a lot. My original Xbox however doesn’t look quite as good, however finding high grade component video cables for my Xbox would help. I'm happy with the purchase, and I know that getting a higher-end receiver would yield greater results, but I think this works out just fine.

Luke stares longingly at that thing every time we go to Best Buy. Guess we're gonna have to give in and get one eventually...
