Manhunt 2 (Wii)
Posted 13 months ago by Jpage0024
So the most controversial game in recent memory is now finally released on to the fragile public. Its been nearly four years since the original Manhunt shocked its way into our hearts as being one of the most violent games of its time. It turned heads four years ago, and Manhunt 2 continues the style with a few modifications. You start the game off as Daniel Lamb who has been locked away for over 6 years after his involvement with something titled "The Pickman Project" in an insane asylum. Even within the first few minutes you have to dodge urine and feces thrown from other inmates and immediately make the first kill. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket The Wii version adds a new factor to the whole series that some may really enjoy and others may really resent. I found myself in between on the issue. The bonus behind this version is that you are totally in control of every aspect of the executions. After you've chosen your level of brutality by waiting and holding A, you then are asked to perform certain motions with the remote and nun chuck that let you pace the whole kill. Now the interesting thing about the Wii version is that it is even more censored than the PS2 version, but I found myself concentrating so hard on getting the right motions that I often didn’t get to see the actual execution. So if I can’t really see the executions because I'm doing the movements, wouldn’t it be nice to at least see a less censored execution from my peripheral vision? Ultimately, I see enough of it to enjoy it even if I can't see the guy’s teeth flying all over the place. Executions aside the rest of the game violence really delivers. Headshots have a very satisfying payoff along with hand to hand and melee damage. This game also offers the new addition of environmental executions. They seem to pop up everywhere and who’s going to argue with throwing a man into a giant shredder or dropping someone down into a manhole after introducing his face to the manhole cover? You can also perform executions by dropping from a higher part of the level, such as a roof. The level design is just as gritty and dirty as the original, even though the graphics really are not up to par with today's standards. It feels very much like the Rockstar kind of visual style of games such as Bully, Grand Theft Auto, and Manhunt; unlike games such as table tennis, which utilizes the Rage engine. It would have been nice to see this game look a little more modern, but then the realism may have been so high that this game would have never seen the light of day. The only thing that this game really lacks is that fear of turning a corner and being overwhelmed with the thought of 'how the hell am I going to make it through this section?’ I found myself taking it very slow around the beginning levels so that I wasn’t walking into a death trap, only to find that the enemies were not there. The game also pretty much alerts you to new enemies with a short clip as you continue through a section. This actually becomes less and less towards the end. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Over all I recommend this to any fans of the original game or anyone that likes the idea knowing what it feels like to hit an enemy over the head with a toilet lid! The censorship is annoying, but doesn’t hinder the game really, and though it’s not possible yet with Wii; maybe someone will crack it for us such as with the PSP version. Even I have a hard time stomaching a lot of the executions uncensored. Don’t miss out on all the fun.

They had some videos recently of the uncensored kills on youtube, but they were taken down at the request of Take 2. It is over the top, but the game really ends up being fun overall. True rockstar fashion (minus State of Emergency).

Excellent review, though I'm not sure I'm thrilled about the over-the-top violence they put in the game in the name of causing controversy. You'll have to show me next time I'm over, though.

After all that controversy, I can't help but be curious about this one. The first game's environments really creeped me out, and if this one could deliver a similar experience, I may end up giving it a try.
