Throwback Thursday

There are some games that come along that you never forget. Most of these titles were played in my younger years, when all I had to worry about was homework and gaming. A lot has changed since then, but thank god I can still travel back in time to play those old games I grew up with.

This week Throwback Thursday will take a look at Commando for the NES system. And no this Commando doesn’t feature the beloved Governor of California (you know the one with the thick accent). The Commando I’m talking about consists of an elite soldier who’s name is Super Joe.

After being dropped in by helicopter, Joe starts his adventure through the harsh environment of this vertical scroller. Armed with just a machine gun and a handful of grenades you are expected to single-handedly fight off an enormous number of troops that appear to be from the World War 2 era. And if you’re a big fan of health regeneration or assorted weapons, you won’t be welcome here. Commando gives you three live that’s all. Well, they also give you a gun with unlimited ammo to make it through the game. So you won’t run out of bullets, but the only way to acquire another life is by accumulating a higher score. After reaching around 20,000 points you’ll be awarded with an extra life that will come in handy further along in your adventure. The action is fast and the enemy densely populates the path you’re forced to take. So use your grenades wisely and keep the B button held down.

There are 2 different missions in the game and each mission is made up of 4 sub-missions. The first mission that you are dropped into is a jungle environment (if you can call it that). To me this board looks more like a vacation in Iraq that went horribly wrong. Most of the other levels are of the same quality and lack in graphic quality. But hey if I wanted beautiful graphics I would’ve reviewed a PS2 or Xbox game this week. But no, instead I decided to grin and bare it, and I enjoyed every moment. I even caught myself wondering if I would benefit from a gun with unlimited ammo on COD 4. Even though I’m a huge fan of the next-gen games that are out. It’s still nice to play the good old games of the past from time to time.

If only this game was based off Commando, then we could throw buzzsaws and enemies' heads!
