Throwback Thursday:Paperboy
Posted About 1 year ago by MeLLoWDaDDee

Well I started off Throwback Thursday with the arcade classic Paperboy. I remeber actually playing this title in the arcade with the handlebar controls, but spent most of my time playing the NES version of the game. This games storyline is simple, you are a paperboy trying to make it through a workweek plagued with the inconveniences of everyday life. There are three difficulty settings in this title. Easy Street, Middle Road, and Hard Way being the hardest setting. You start of on Monday with a full bag of papers and a fresh outlook on life. The goal is to deliver as many papers as you can to "your subscribers" and make it through the day. The more subscribers you deliver to the more money you get at the end of the day. If you are lucky enough to make all your deliveries you are rewarded with more cash and you get to pick up another customer. This is beginning to sound more and more like real life, do a good job=more workload for you. Anyway as you progress through the game the days get harder and harder. The days become plagued with obstacles to maneuver around like, radio controlled cars, tires rolling down the street for no reason, drunks, break dancers, kids on big wheels, tornadoes, and even the grim reaper. I bet this game sounds ridiculously easy but it's not. Send a paper through a window, lost that customer, cat attack, you're dead, run out of papers, you're done for the day. I remember this game fondly in a love hate way. After seeing the title released on the XBL arcade I downloaded it quickly and was whisked away to my childhood once again.........

To all of you that would like to see more of Throwback Thursday feel free to post a comment about what game you would like to see reviewed on the page please, or if you want write your own. We are trying to do this every Thursday and I wouldn't mind anyones contribution to keeping this going........thanks again SoulScreme

If this is regarding the original arcade rom version of Paperboy...awesome game with the bicycle controls on the cabinet. Any of the remakes that was gone was just poor and plain.

It's worth noting that the arcade version of Paperboy is much more difficult than the NES version.

It's also worth noting that I am completely awesome at the NES version and can go through an entire week on one life.

I loved the guy walking down the street with the giant boom box. Oh, it also cracked me up that no matter how well you did, when you finally lose, the newspaper declares you the "Worst Paperboy Ever." Some gratitude.

Man, this game was so weird. I get the whole going down the street and delivering papers thing. But when they started throwing in bears and tornadoes I was just baffled. Still, a true classic and tons of fun. One of the many NES carts on my list to pick up.
