Confirmed: Bioshock coming to the silver screen
Posted 3 days ago by NickDynmo

The rumors are finally confirmed! Variety, confirmed by Take 2 Interactive, reports that the critically-acclaimed game Bioshock is being adapted into a movie, directed and produced by none other than Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Carribbean). In talks for the screenplay is John Logan (Aviator).

The movie is being released by Universal, who, along with Fox, signed on with Microsoft in 2005 to release the Halo movie. Since that movie went under (for now), Bioshock is planned to be the biggest game-to-movie adaptation thus far, with Universal siigning a multi-million dollar contract to make the undersea objectivist adventure. Ayn Rand would be proud!

As far as how the movie's going to turn out, don't be too worried. In an interview with Variety's Cut Scene blog, Verbinski assures us that "fans will not be disappointed," and that he frequently hangs out with and consults Kevin Levine, the game's creative director. He's shooting for an R-rating, hoping to go "right up to the edge with the Little Sisters."

No release date has been set, but Variety speculates it will be released before the Bioshock sequel comes out in 2009.

Actually, Depp as Ryan isn't half bad. I mean, there are a dozen better guys, but...

If they keep to the promise of making it R-rated, I couldn't be more excited. However I doubt that it will be anything other than a PG-13 once they compare the potential dollars.

Awesome, I expect Johnny Depp to play a flamboyant Keith Richards inspired Andrew Ryan.

Haha, sorry, Veggie! I was rushing to get this done before I came to work this morning.

I might have to see this one. Bioshock still remains my favourite 360 game (sorry, GTA IV!), and Gore Verbinski doesn't seem like a bad choice, also considering he's consulting with Kevin Levine. I know most video game adaptations are usually terrible (although Silent Hill wasn't bad) but this one may turn out alright! Can't wait for a trailer.
