At the beginning of the month, I caved and bought a PSP to play Silent Hill 0rigins, the latest game in the SIlent Hill franchise. Of course, now that I shelled out all that cash for it, they are putting it out for the PS2, despite it supposedly being a PSP exclusive, but that's another story.
I was a little bit nervous going into this game, as it is the first in the series that was not handled by Team Silent, but instead Climax in the UK. But I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. They did a good job with it. The atmosphere was perfectly suited for a Silent Hill game, and the character of Travis was a welcome addition to the long list of people to travel through the town.
The game did have its bad points. This was supposed to be a prequel to the events of the first game, yet I don't feel like they really shed a lot of light on those events at all. They also took a few too many liberties with the already established characters, but when you sit and think about it, they make sense, so it balances out in the end.
There are also a lot of monsters to fight this time around, and the ones you find on the street often times end up being more difficult to kill than the bosses. You find melee weapons around every corner because they break so easily, but not nearly enough health items.
There are 3 obtainable endings in this game: Good, Bad, and UFO. I was so happy to see the return of the UFO ending after it was scrapped in the 4th game. The good ending is pretty good, the bad ending is confusing. The UFO ending is cute.
Overall, this game is a worthy entry to the Silent Hill franchise, and I eagerly await to see what The Collective will do with Silent Hill 5.

i've had a torrid love affair with the silent hill series since its inception and no matter how many pairs of underwear i have to go through with each one, i'm always ready for it. not having a psp, i was pretty sad when this first came out. but then the gods smiled on me and told me in a dream that they're porting it to ps2. WEEEEE!!!
I'd LOVE to play these games - it's just that I get so scared by them that I can't sleep afterwards. Seriously. I got freaked out by the Trilby games (www.fullyramblomatic.com), so maybe I shouldn't give this a try. Good review, though.
I've never been a huge fan of Silent Hill, but I might check this one out.
nice review! I gave it the same score. it's always nice to know I'm not alone in my Silent Hill love, and we could always use more PSP reviews.
