An Open Letter To Sony
Posted 11 months, 1 weeks ago by Sarah

Dear Sony,

How’s it going, guys? I hope you’re well despite the millions of dollars you must be in the hole with that whole "no one buying your console" thing. Well, guess what. I’m here to help… maybe.

Here’s the thing, guys. I really, really want to want a PlayStation 3. I mean, I’ve been a PlayStation fan since day one. The PS1 might be my favorite system of all time, and some of my favorite games came out for that console. Sure, a lot of them may have had the words "final" and "fantasy" in their titles, but that doesn’t change the fact that back in the day (which for me was about 7th grade), the PlayStation kicked major ass. And the PS2? I still play mine constantly. I have to respect the only last-gen system that hasn’t been rendered completely obsolete, especially since my Xbox and Gamecube are sadly hidden away in their boxes, hoping that someday, they might get a chance to shine again. The PS2 introduced me to franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Guitar Hero, as well as giving me a steady stream of solid RPGs I never would have gotten to play on any other system.

When you guys first announced that the PS3 was coming out, I immediately wanted one. After all, you made it, so I figured it would have to be completely awesome. Well, it’s been almost a year now, and still… I’m not really overwhelmed with your new system. First of all, it’s kind of big and ugly. No offense or anything, but have you guys even taken a look at the Wii or the Xbox 360? They’re slim, streamlined, and aesthetically pleasing. Now I’m sure that with all of the technology and backwards compatibility and Blu-Ray nonsense you had to cram in there, making your system pretty was not your biggest concern, but it worries me when I don’t know how I’m going to fit your oversized hunk of metal in my entertainment center with all my other systems.

And while we’re on the subject, let’s talk about the price. Um, $600? Seriously? Is it going to feed and house me for a month, too? Now, I know what you’re going to say something along the lines of “for a Blu-Ray DVD player, $600 is a really good price point…” Save it. I just want to play the games. And where are they? I mean, right about now, you’ve got Heavenly Sword… and Heavenly Sword… I have no doubt that someday, you will have a superb library of games available, but with no Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, or Resident Evil in the near future, what am I supposed to look forward to? I mean, I’m sorry, but I already have Guitar Hero III and Grand Theft Auto IV paid off… for the Xbox 360.

Oh, don’t be mad, Sony. We had our good times, didn’t we? Maybe it’s just time we went our separate ways, unless you give me a reason to stick around. How about more exclusive titles, for a start? And just so we’re clear, I mean exclusive titles that don’t suck. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Little Big Planet do look pretty promising, I’ll admit. And that price drop you gave us was pretty sweet, too, although I’m not quite sure how I’m supposed to feel about a console that already has two discontinued models within ten months of its launch. Sure, paying $500 this Christmas and having a couple of games to play into the new year wouldn’t be too bad, but is it enough?

I guess what I’m trying to say, Sony, is this: Give me a reason to buy a PS3. Let me know that if I buy your system, it actually will be a good investment, not an expensive paperweight. I really don’t want to waste my cash on what could become the next Dreamcast, you know. So just tell me, without quoting any statistics on the PS2’s sales or reiterating the same old garbage we’ve all heard a million times, why I want a PS3.

Thanks for your time, Sony. I’ll be on Xbox Live when (or if) you have an answer for me.

Your friend,

Sarah

This is exactly how I feel. Show us something to buy first. You dont get married without knowing the person first. We want to love you Sony, but you make it so hard.

The price may have been high, but the main issue is the games. Whenever Sony gets games, the system will sell. Stop focusing in on Home and move to the entertainment.
