Detroit Lawyer Releases List of 10 Most Violent Games
Posted About 1 year ago by Sarah
Kym Worthy seems to think that her occupation as a prosecutor in the second most violent city in the country gives her the right to decide what the most violent video games are this holiday season. For the third year in a row, she has released a slightly outdated list of what she believes are the most violent games, urging parents not to buy them for children. Why? Because they obviously contribute to the amount of violence this country has seen in recent years, desensitizing children to these acts and glorifying shooting, drugs, carjacking, and running over pedestrians. Give me a break.

Below is her list, and she’s clearly done her research, because 9 out of the 10 games weren’t even originally released this year. If she really felt the need to do something like this, she could have at least done her homework to determine what’s actually in demand this holiday season.

1. Grand Theft Auto

Can you vague that up a little more? There hasn’t been a straight console release of a GTA game since 2005, unless you count the ports of the PSP versions. I think that what she’s actually saying to parents is, please don’t go into the future to procure a copy of GTA IV for your children and give it to them on Christmas. I wish I could time-travel as well as lawyers and journalists do.

2. Manhunt

Shocker! Manhunt causes controversy once again. Perhaps we should all assume she means Manhunt 2, which was released this fall, and not the original that came out in 2004. She didn’t really specify. So I guess the kids are clamoring to get their hands on either a used copy of a three-year-old game that’s long been discontinued, or a poorly-reviewed game that’s only available on one of the three next-gen systems. Sounds likely.

3. Scarface

This game is over a year old, and based on a classic film from 1983. Even without playing the game, everyone who’s ever turned on a television already knows the story. How is this at all relevant?

4. 50 Cent Bulletproof

Parents should refrain from buying this game, but only because it is complete and utter garbage. This news may have been more up-to-date in holiday season 2005, which is when the game actually came out.

5. The 300

Hey, a game that actually came out in 2007! Sure, it only came out on the PSP, and in the early months of the year, but it’s the closest we’ve come so far to finding a game that might actually be on some child’s holiday list. Also, it was based on the movie that was based on the graphic novel that was based on actual historical events. So obviously history classes are going to be the next thing banned, right, Kym?

6. The Godfather

Again, came out last year, and was based on what is largely considered to be one of the best films ever made. I shouldn’t really have to say anything more about this pointless entry.

7. Killer7

Okay, I think I finally figured out how Kym made this list. She walked into a GameStop, wrote down the titles of the first ten M-rated titles she saw, and called it a day. That’s the only explanation I have for this low-selling game from 2005 being on her list.

8. Resident Evil 4

RE4 was re-released for the Wii this year, even though it’s been available for the Gamecube for two years. I guess Kym doesn’t want kids being subjected to this zombie-genocide-simulator. After all, zombies have feelings too.

9. God of War

Again, I have no idea whether she means the original (released in 2005) or the sequel (released in March of this year). Most of the characters in either game can only be found in mythology. If you’re worried about your kids going apeshit on some minotaurs or harpies, you might want to stay away from this one.

10. Hitman: Blood Money

Yeah, because this game only came out a year and a half ago. I’m not denying that it’s violent, but the bottom line with this, and every other game on this list, is that no amount of blood and gore seen in a video game is going to turn an angel into a killer. If you really think that kids are dumb enough to take this seriously, then there are much bigger problems at hand here.

I would love to know what gives anyone the right to tell other parents what they should and shouldn’t buy for their kids. Maybe instead, she should be telling these parents to inform their children that there is a difference between reality and fantasy and that violence is bad. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I was raised knowing the distinction between video games and real life. That way, when my parents bought games like Mortal Kombat, Doom II, and yes, even the evil Grand Theft Auto for my brothers and me, they knew we weren’t going to act out the violence we saw in games on each other. But I guess I’m just old-fashioned that way.

Hah. Well, once again we see what too little knowledge can do to people with too much power and too much time to waste. And what that in turn can do to parents with too little knowledge and not an ounce of common sense.

Good one, Sarah.

She should release the ten most deadliest beer commercials....I think DUI's kill more people, and alcohol is more detrimental to our society than a violent video game....

shouldn't lawyers worry about other things like sueing people, Convicting criminals, and getting guns off the street?

She doesn't know much about some of the real violent games. Oh well, she's obviously not a gamer.
