Prediction: Next Generation of Consoles Will Launch in 2010
Posted About 1 month ago by Sarah

It’s now been well over two years since the Xbox 360 launched, and a year and a half into the life cycles of the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3. In other words, the “next generation” that we’re constantly referring to is no longer “next” and definitely, well, current. You may be enjoying your ever-popular systems now in all of their shiny glory, but enjoy it while it lasts, because the next next generation could be here sooner than you think.

Analyst Evan Wilson of Pacific West Securities has taken it upon himself to make some educated guesses in regards to when we will see the next wave of new consoles from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, according to Gamernode. His prediction? In 2010, a mere two years away, both Nintendo and Microsoft will likely be launching new systems. Don’t cry if you just dropped $500 on a new PS3, though, as Sony’s hulking black box will likely have the longest lifecycle of this generation’s consoles. Say what you want about Sony, but keep in mind that it was the only publisher not to completely abandon the previous generation’s system when the next one was released. Wilson also believes that next-gen DS and PSP systems will appear in 2010. Even though both handhelds have already undergone makeovers in their lifespan, it wouldn’t surprise me to see completely new portable systems from both publishers.

Am I the only one completely not excited for the impending new batch of consoles? As much as I love seeing new technology in action, especially when it comes to video games, I don’t want my 360 and Wii to become instantly obsolete the way the old Xbox and Gamecube did in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Also, with the amount of money I’ve put into both consoles and games this generation, I’m not about to just let it go and start all over again. I know that this is the way of the video game world, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. What about the rest of you? Anyone else excited for what consoles the world will see next?

It makes sense that Microsoft would be developing a new console because of the whole Blu-Ray deal, but Sony and Nintendo just recently came out with theirs. I'll bank on having to buy a new 360, 720, or whatever they'll call it for sure, but unless Sony comes out with a PS3 with a 200 gig hard drive I'll stay away from making a Sony purchase anytime in the near future....

I just feel that Nintendo and Sony have so much untapped potential in their current consoles. If the Wii falls by the wayside without making use of the ever-exciting motion tracking technology, it would be a tragedy.

And I'm hoping that the PS3 makes a game that makes the list price of the machine (with supposedly far superior graphics and processors) the obvious choice in the console wars. Why isn't Sony flexing nutz? Do they think they don't have to?

The 360 was the first out of the gate, built up a good library, a solid fanbase, and a proficient online connection. The system is nothing to scoff at or write home about. And RRoD aside, they did a good job. If they crank out another enjoyable, yet unspectacular system next year, I'd probably pick it up.

If Sony and Nintendo want to unveil the next big thing on their consoles, I better see some games that fuckin "Wow" me with it....

I think that Microsoft will be the only one to create a new console by 2010. Sony's PS3 has hardware a little ahead of itself with the proper firmware updates it can survive a while. Nintendo I don't believe will make another console just yet due to the popularity of the Wii. If they do decide to do so it's because they won't be interested in making any more Wii's. They'd rather move on, whether a redesign or likewise, then make a complete shift all at once.

As for the handhelds, I think that the DS will undergo some new design only. I can see Sony actually adding an additional analog stick and advancing the technology in the processor and video capability for their next unit. It'll be interesting to see last-gen titles on the system. Maybe we'll get extended battery life without the $45 fee.

I would believe this for Microsoft, but not for Nintendo. Not only would gamers be betrayed by a new Wii but the potential within the system would be thrown away. If gamers learned anything from the N64 and the GameCube, it's that the best software arrives in a console's twilight (Paper Mario/ Resident Evil 4). I think five years is a round, even number for a life cycle... even if it means that the other consoles have a major technological lead.

You have to consider that the Wii is in a realm of its own. A console still selling out about eighteen months after its release breaks even the largest precedents. I think it takes a massive stretch of the imagination to predict a launch in 2010. But as for Microsoft? Might be a smart move to beat Sony at the "future-proof" game.
