Use Your Own Music in Rock Band 2?
Posted 10 months, 2 weeks ago by Sarah

If there's one thing almost all gamers can agree on, it's that Rock Band is a blast. It's a game that's brought people together like no other, and the weekly downloadable content keeps the game constantly feeling new and fresh. But what if you could put music from your own personal collection in the game?

It may not be a reality yet, but in the future, it may happen. When Chris Foster of Harmonix spoke at GDC this week, they mentioned that they have been looking for a way to allow gamers to import their own music into Rock Band. In fact, they would have liked it to be a feature in the first game, but it didn't quite make it in. Hopefully, Foster says, they can find a way to put it in subsequent Rock Band games.

It's a little premature to be talking about what will be in the next Rock Band since the game hasn't even been announced yet, but let's all take a second and think about how awesome it would be if you could put any song from your iPod into Rock Band. However, that would probably lead to a lot less downloaded content for the game (and a lot less money for everyone involved). Will it ever actually happen? We'll just have to wait and see.

I hope it creates it's own chart when you import it.

this will end up filling up hard drives pretty fast. i wonder if they can create an online accessible database or something.

I am very interested in these music/rhythm games but I'm such a music snob that I can't picture myself rocking out to some classic rock or pop stuff (even though I like both). It is the same reason I don't listen to the radio or watch TV. I want to program my own entertainment. If they did add that functionality I would play non-stop. It's part of the reason I love Beats. I love playing my music.

First song I'd do: Still Alive.

This is one of the best ideas I've heard all year!

If we're talking real upgrade, I'd like to see RB2 add a second microphone and synthesizer too. Add into that the ability to convert your own songs, and the possibilities are endless. In that perfect scenario, my dream set list would be:

Enfilade - At the Drive In
The Happening - Pixies
Survivalism - Nine Inch Nails
Can You Picture That - Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem
St. Francis Dam Disaster - Frank Black
Knives Out - Radiohead
The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song - Flaming Lips
Let's Go Crazy - Prince and the Revolution
and close with....
Sleep Now in the Fire - Rage Against the Machine

I wonder how "Fight the Power" by Public Enemy would play on Rock Band if this becomes reality. This is a great idea though the songs that come with the game get old, and keeping up with the DLC could put you in the poorhouse.

They do make a lot of money off their weekly DLC, but this could work. What if you had to pay $2.00 to add one song to your RB2? By downloading a song template or something of that nature.
