So, remember the other day, when Master Chief was partying in celebration of having the top-selling game on a single console? He was all, “I sold 4.8 million copies in America! Woo!” Meanwhile, Kings of the World Activision, not content to just sit around and be 2007’s number one publisher, isn’t having any of that, as they actually have the best-selling game in the world.
In a press release sent to us by Activision this morning, it was announced that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare sold over seven million copies worldwide since its November launch, making it the best-selling game across multiple platforms. So while Halo 3 was the highest-selling game on a system, when you add up all of the copies of Call of Duty 4 sold across multiple platforms, Activision wins.
The press release:
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan 25, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that Call of Duty 4(R): Modern Warfare(TM) was the #1 title in units worldwide for calendar 2007, according to The NPD Group, Chart Track and The GFK Group. Developed by Infinity Ward, Call of Duty 4(R): Modern Warfare(TM) has sold in excess of seven million units worldwide since its launch in November.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has garnered critical acclaim, securing more than 18 perfect score reviews and over 40 combined Editors' Choice and Game of the Year awards in the U.S. alone. The game has been nominated for 10 prestigious Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences awards, including Game of the Year. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare also currently is the #1 Xbox 360(TM) title on Xbox Live, based on unique users, according to www.majornelson.com.
"We're very excited about this achievement especially given so many competitive titles this year," said Will Kassoy, senior vice president, global brand management, Activision Publishing, Inc. "Consumer and critics agree that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the best games ever created and further establishes Call of Duty as one of the premier brands in the industry. This ground-breaking game and franchise continue to establish new standards by which all other action games will be judged."
Hey, look at that, two military-inspired first-person shooters as our reigning champions of the past year. I guess modern warfare has been much more profitable for the Call of Duty series than World War II was. Hopefully they’ll keep that in mind when making the next installment instead of taking another trip in the way-back machine.
