- Game-Hating Politician is Giant Hypocrite
- Posted 10 months ago by Sarah
Oh, I am loving this one. We all know how I feel about politicians (and lawyers, and uninformed members of the media, and just about anyone) who use video games as an easy scapegoat to supposedly take a stand on something. Eliot Spitzer, current governor of New York, is very much one of those politicians. During his 2006 campaign, he said, “we must do more to protect our children from excessive sex and violence in the media”. Naturally, this meant going after Grand Theft Auto, everyone’s favorite target, for its “graphic, more violent and more sex-based” content:
“Currently, nothing under New York State law prohibits a fourteen-year-old from walking into a video store and buying ... a game like ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ which rewards a player for stealing cars and beating people up. Children can even simulate having sex with a prostitute..."
Oh, no! Not prostitutes in video games! Way to tackle those serious issues, dude. Naturally, Spitzer, a family man with three teenage daughters, would want to protect his clan from the horrors of prostitution… but only when it’s in video game form. In real life, Spitzer is actually a big fan of prostitutes, having spent thousands of dollars on an international prostitution ring.
I won’t go into all the sordid (and mildly funny) details of his solicitation history, other than the fact that he was revealed as “Client 9” by the prostitutes, who have said that he could sometimes be a difficult customer. He was busted on a wiretap while trying to arrange for a companion to travel to New York for him. Nicely done, Eliot Spitzer.
While the governor is reportedly currently considering resignation, I’m having a good laugh over this. If that’s not a nice bit of ironic karma, I don’t know what is. Go ahead and eat your words, Client 9. Bet Grand Theft Auto doesn’t seem so bad now, does it?
