- Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Adds Some More Bands
- Posted 9 months, 2 weeks ago by Sarah
I’ve had mixed feelings about the upcoming Guitar Hero: Aerosmith since it was announced. I like Aerosmith, but do I like them enough to pay $60 for a Guitar Hero that may just be an expansion? I learned my lesson the hard way with Guitar Hero Rocks the 80s. Besides, it would have to take a hell of a lot to get me to cast Rock Band aside and go back to Guitar Hero; the thought of Guitar Hero III’s boss battles still makes me angry.
However, the lineup of songs in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is shaping up to be pretty damn good, with Aerosmith bringing some friends along to rock with them. Among the songs will be “I Hate Myself For Loving You” by Joan Jett, Cheap Trick’s “Dream Police”, “All Day and All Night” by the Kinks, and Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes”.
The concept of the game also sounds neat, I have to admit. The game will follow Aerosmith’s career, including replicating the high school where they played their very first gig and including bands that Aerosmith have rocked out with in the past. Okay, now I’m kind of interested. I may just have to pick up my Guitar Hero guitar once again and give this game a try when it comes out in June.

Come over with beer.
I like the beer that goes along with anything.
carrie brownstein writes a blog for NPR, and she posted a few months ago about the guitar hero/rock band phenomena and it's effect on musicians and those who want to be musicians. it's an interesting take and one i hadn't heard before.

I stand by my point. I like a game that involves something that you can't do in real life and for those who aren't musicians than this is your ticket. But when you've played a million shows and have CDs in stores then its kind of a downgrade. There are so many limits on the instruments - and yes I understand that it is a game, I get it - however to any musician the fun part is just jamming and doing fills on any instrument whenever you can. As far as it being a great social game, well I find more joy in working on a song with a group of people and the joy you get when you come up with some really awesome stuff. It FAR outweighs gaining imaginary fans.
I like the beer that goes along with Rock Band if that counts for anything.
Yeah Mike! I may not have the musical talent of the rest of you guys, but playing Rock Band isn't about that. It's like Mike said, it's a lot of fun to play together. Don't know if I'll ever pick up another Guitar Hero, though.
Ian, I agree with you on Guitar Hero. I was ready to give up on this series after the release of Guitar Hero II, when I realized, it's the exact same game as the first one.
But Rockband is more than just a game simulating playing live music. It is an extremely fun cooperative experience that can be enjoyed by the best musicians or people with no musical talent whatsoever, together. It's a great group activity that can be played as casually as you want to. Because of this, it really is a huge leap beyond GH, in my opinion.
HATERS! How can you say you wish fun would die out? This genre is a blast. Who cares if it's not real instruments? That's not the point. That's like saying instead of playing Madden, you should be playing football. Or instead of leveling up your Dark Elf priestess, you should be outside killing boars. C'mon, people, loosen up on the music elitism.
Ps... Dream Police? Really, now? Not exactly a reason for me to buy this Activision. Stop thinking Cheap Trick is cool.
Darth Mattingly, I couldn't have said it better myself.
I wish this genre would die out. All that happens to me when I play any of them (GHs or RB) is the sudden urge to go into your basement and play for real. Nothing beats actually jammin' out on the real thing(s). I guess if you're not much of a musician or when it's not really available to play in a band in someones basement after like 6 PM, it makes some sense - but still not enough. I'm not wasting my money on any of them. I'd rather save up and get more REAL music equipment! Also, Aerosmith...come on.
