- Is Microsoft Developing a Motion-Sensitive Controller?
- Posted 4 months, 2 weeks ago by Sarah
The Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360 don’t exactly have a whole lot in common. The 360 tends to cater to a more hardcore audience, while the Wii has made a name for itself as a casual gaming machine with its motion-sensitive controls. The Wii has also sold about a bazillion units worldwide, and it looks like Microsoft wants to get in on that too. According to MTV News, it appears that Microsoft may be working on its own motion-sensitive controller in response to the Wii.
The first sketch of the upcoming controller shows a microphone, an analog stick, and, oh yeah, looks just like Nintendo’s Wii remote. However, what makes this controller different is that there is no accompanying piece (like the nunchuk for the Wii). Microsoft has apparently been developing this controller since last summer, and has some ambitious plans for the remote, including compatibility with the Xbox Live camera. There’s been no official announcement yet, so by the time we hear more on this, the controller may look different than the current prototype seen above.
It’s interesting that Microsoft appears to be adopting motion sensitive controls just as Sony is throwing them out entirely for the PS3. Hopefully, any 360 games that use these controls will integrate them well, and not just toss them in as an afterthought. Let’s also hope that if this controller ever does hit the market, the 360 doesn’t get as flooded with mediocre third-party games as the Wii has been.

WOW a Wiimote with a Microsoft label I'm blown away....
Even if they do bring it out for this system, I can't see it being much more than a gimmick. Like the Guncon for Time Crisis 4...
Or the NES PowerPad...
Yay!
Odds are this will never, ever come to pass. MS is doing fine without it and they know anything like this would be best reserved for the NEXT-gen.
