Square Enix Having Some Money Troubles
Posted 5 months, 3 weeks ago by Sarah

Last year was a profitable one for quite a few video game publishers, but RPG-making behemoth Square Enix was not among them. According to a 2007 financial statement, the company’s profits took a 20% dive. Squenix did especially poorly in the U.S. in the last fiscal year, which is definitely a cause for concern. Keep in mind that while the company did well in 2006, the year that Final Fantasy XII came out, they struggled last year without a major release in any of their core franchises.

So what is the company going to do about it? According to Kotaku, the higher-ups at Squenix are not messing around, and have threatened to start terminating employees if numbers do not improve. Apparently, there is some concern that the games the company is publishing are straying further away from the mainstream, which often equals less sales. Considering that the company recently released a game that many reviewers (myself included) praised for its uniqueness, this makes me worry a little bit. Does this mean we’re not going to see any more risk-takers like The World Ends With You from Square Enix anytime soon? That would really be a shame.

Of course, Squenix still has some Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest remakes coming out for the DS this year, which should be fairly lucrative. Maybe it would help if they could manage to get out Final Fantasy XIII and Kingdom Hearts III sometime this decade as well, but that seems less and less likely every day. Hey, guys, you know how you could make a whole lot of cash? Final Fantasy VII remake. I’m just saying.

The Mana series has been rather mediocre in recent years, which is a shame. Oh, Square Enix, I want to love you, but it's not always easy.

I'm thinking he's talking more about other games.... like the Mana series which has been brought down to the ground by ridiculously bad games.

I guess even the bigger developers are bound to fail, look at Atari, they're not doing to good either. Sad times, sad times....
