Why Atlus Games Are So Hard to Find
Posted 7 months, 3 weeks ago by Sarah

I may be the only Atlus freak in the Gamervision office, but I’m okay with that. It’s not that I was ever against Atlus or anything, but in the last year or so, I’ve become a super fan of the game company. After spending almost 200 combined hours on Persona 3 and Odin Sphere, I am hooked and will probably try anything Atlus comes out with.

Unfortunately, finding Atlus games here in the United States can sometimes be a bit of a problem. The first Trauma Center game for the DS was a rarity in stores for two years after it came out. Persona 3 has been hard to find since it came out in the U.S. last August, and good luck trying to find a copy of the first Persona on ebay for less than a hundred bucks. Why is it that these awesome Atlus games are so hard to get your hands on?

As it turns out, I’m not the only one who has wondered what this is all about. Atlus’s lead public relations man, Aram Jabbari, recently told MTV why Atlus games are so hard to find. As the company appeals to a smaller niche demographic mostly interested in Japanese imports and hardcore RPGs, Atlus prefers to keep production numbers smaller.

“There’s no malice in it… I wish we could produce to demand. It’s a lot better to come up five percent short of total sales, as opposed to having 25 percent excess product. With that 25 percent, you’re going to have markdowns.”

Nowadays, I know better and pre-order any Atlus games I know I want far in advance. However, with their titles gradually getting more popular in the U.S., the time may come where they have to increase their numbers to appeal to a larger audience. I wish I could convince more people about the awesomeness of Atlus games, but I’m usually dismissed as just a crazy JRPG fan. Then again, they’re not wrong.

As long as you buy their games in the 1st few weeks, you don't really need to pre-order them around here. We got Gamebuzz to thanks because they order a massive number of copies because they know they're going to sell ;)
(unlike EBgames which only buy pre-order copies only numbers).

Btw, there is a reprint of Nocturne happening now if anyone is still looking for one ;)

also reminds me I have yet to finish Odin Sphere (that game HAS to be put on a PS2 hdd ;) the instant loading time alone is worth the hassle)
