Wii to Outsell 360 and PS3 Combined This Year?
Posted 9 months, 1 weeks ago by Sarah

Odd, I thought it was reported earlier that the impending economic recession would put a stop to Nintendo’s insane sales. Not so, says one analyst, Daniel Ernst of Hudson Square Research. He predicts that the Nintendo Wii will continue to sell like hotcakes, selling 23 million units in fiscal year 2009 (which lasts from now until next March). That’s more than the expected 11.2 million Xbox 360 units and 12.5 million PS3 consoles he foresees Microsoft and Sony will sell this fiscal year:

"Microsoft got the jump on the industry with a one-year headstart, but nine months after its the launch [sic], the Nintendo Wii overtook the Xbox 360 on a global basis. While the PS3, has struggled out of the gate, we note that since last fall, the console has been outselling the Xbox 360 in Europe, and in the first two months of this year has even outsold the Xbox 360 on its home turf, in the U.S. (In Japan, overtaking the Xbox 360 was almost immediate). With its strong slate of software scheduled for the coming year, we expect a material acceleration for the PS3 this year, but we believe the Wii will sell more than the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined this year.”

That’s interesting enough, and I’m sure a lot of thought and research went into making that very official prediction, but I find it hard to take anyone who releases such grammatically incorrect statement seriously. Also, how hard is it to imagine that a system that sells out as soon as it hits stores is going to do well this year? I guess we’ll find out next March how close Daniel’s predictions actually end up being.

I could see this happening if Nintendo could keep up with production.

I'll be surprised if the PS3 doesn't outsell this year. Seems that Sony's master plan of Blu-ray dominating the HD market has succeeded.
