NIU Shooting Blamed on Video Games
Posted 10 months, 3 weeks ago by Sean

Yesterday, the very real tragedy of a school shooting struck again. This time the scene was Northern Illinois University, and the shooter was a graduate student named Stephen P. Kazmierczak of Champaign, Illinois. Steven opened fire in a crowded geology class, killing six people (including himself) and wounding another fifteen. There isn't a whole lot of additional information on this incident yet. We know that Steven apparently did not have any history of run-ins with the campus police, and was not known to be a troublemaker. It is still so raw and painful that people have their hands full trying to make sense of the whole situation.

There is one man, however, who doesn't need to wait for an investigation, facts, or any of the usual information in order to make a determination as to why this happened. According to a story on Kotaku, everyone's favorite attorney, Mr. Jack Thompson, appeared this morning on Fox News as a "video game expert" and, to the surprise of no one, blamed video games.

Yes, apparently even though the police department, the FBI, and the local media who are all covering this event have not pointed any fingers yet, Jack is more than willing to point the blame right where it belongs: Counter-Strike.

Nevermind that Fox News has been repeatedly shown to be a completely useless source for accurate video game reporting, its much more important to drag Jack up on the screen and have him point the finger squarely where it doesn't belong.

Now, it may well turn out that Steven Kazmierczak did in fact play video games, and hell, maybe he was influenced by what he saw on the screen. But to make snap judgements based on no facts, even though it is Jack Thompson's business model, is not acceptable.

I'm pretty sure if I ever met Jack Thompson in person, I would kick him in the neck. He would blame video games, but ooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh would it be worth it

I'm with SheBuek... it is so much easier (read: profitable) for a news organization to make scapegoats out of pariahs.

God forbid we ever have a conversation about how fucking easy it is for anyone to get a gun. We wouldn't want to step on the toes of the people who hold up the Almighty and Infallible 4th Amendment (written by slave owners).

There is no reason why anyone who wants a gun should have one. Let's start that conversation.

Wow....

Let's not blame a poorly funded mental health system, the struggle of the mentally ill re: staying on meds, or a culture that supports E-Z gun ownership. It must be the video games! Of course, that kid may have never played more than Minesweeper, but let's not let the facts muddy the argument. Oh, Fox News, we can always count on you to keep your eye on the ball!

The kid who did it is the only one responsible. I dont want to hear that because he played games, he thought of killing innocent people.
Thats like saying because i play Monopoly, I'm going to ride a dog around town, roll 3 doubles, go to jail- BUT using my get out of jail free card saves my butt (literally) and when i get back to where i stated i demand $200.

If we didn't have video games, they would blame tv. If we had no tv, it would be books. If not books, then the Devil. Its all the Blame Game.
