- Manhunt 2 Ban Lifted in the U.K.
- Posted 9 months, 4 weeks ago by Sean

Last June the the British Board of Film and Literature Classification (BBFC), in its continuting effort to keep safe the Empire and protect Her Majesty's subjects, banned Rockstar Games' gore-fest Manhunt 2 for the Wii. Then in October, they gave the legal "No Thank You" to the toned-down version that got an "M" rating here in the States.
Well, it looks like the punters can get their bollocks out of a tizzy (does that even mean anything?!) A story in the Guardian newspaper (via GamePolitics) is reporting that the Video Appeals Committee (which is essentially the appeals court for publishers banned by the BBFC) has lifted the ban, and given the game an 18+ rating; thus freeing Manhunt 2 to hit English store shelves. If the British gaming public is anything like the American, chances are the game won't get much further than those stores' shelves, as Manhunt 2 sucks.
Responding to the decision to lift the ban, Rockstar issued this statement:
We are pleased that the VAC has reaffirmed its decision recognising that Manhunt 2 is well within the bounds established by other 18+ rated entertainment. The [BBFC] system works in films, but the gameplaying experience is different.

Totally agree Makyo. What I find the most sad about this particular is the amount of people who try to defend it simply because they think someone is trying to hold the video game industry down.
I'd be the first person to say that I think there are places where censorship needs to be changed with video games, but I think in this case it was spot on. I've never personally played Manhunt 2, but from what I've read about it, it basically is (in the words of our favorite lunatic lawyer), a murder simulator.
ok look, i'm not condoning censorship here, but saying the "gameplaying experience is different" in games than in movies? yeah, it's more immersive, more interactive... shouldn't that make a violent video game MORE inappropriate for minors rather than LESS?
i'm not opposed to rating games and movies but the system is so effed up i don't know if it works anymore.
Spot On! Governor!
