- Two More Nails in the Coffin for HD-DVD?
- Posted 9 months, 1 weeks ago by Sean
Stories across the tubes yesterday seemed to sound a final death knell for HD-DVD, the little-format-that-couldn't.
The first story came from Toshiba (by way of the Hollywood Reporter). It seems that Toshiba, after losing hundreds of millions of dollars is set to cease its manufacturing of HD-DVD hardware and software. Jodi Sally, VP of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products, said that "given the market developments in the past month, Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of its recent price reductions on all HD DVD players."
And what market developments could those have been? Well, lets take the fact that both Netflix and Wal-mart have decided to no longer carry HD-DVD titles. Wal-mart, the world's largest retailer, has said that its 4,000 Wal-mart and Sam's Club stores would be phasing out HD-DVD and only carrying Blu-ray titles. The plan is that by June of this year, you will not be able to buy any HD-DVD movies or players in a Wal-mart store.
Wal-mart's official movie and gaming blogger, Susan Chronister, put it in very blunt terms, ""So ... if you bought the HD player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard def movies, and make space for a BD (Blu-ray disc) player for your awesome Hi Def experience."
So say goodbye to HD-DVD kids. It will join Betamax, Laser Discs, and asbestos as products that tried, but ultimately met their match.

I'm going back to Beta, screw you all.....
It shouldn't come down to the best marketing, but what is the superior product. In this case it's Blu-Ray and Blu-ray are going to win.
It's like VHS vs BETA, except this time BETA is winning.
+1 on being glad of NOT buying a HD Drive.
good bye old friend
Time of death... 1:51pm.
Laser discs...Wow.
I remember them!
i wonder if microsoft will bite the bullet and drop the hd drive and make an add on blu-ray.
SO GLAD I never bought an HD-DVD player.
