- Ghostbust[ed]?

According to a GameStop e-mail sent to every store nationwide:
"Activision Blizzard has decided not to publish the Ghostbusters game originally scheduled to release in October. For this reason, we have cancelled this title in our system.
The following ARN call is going out to your Ghostbusters customers: 'Hello, this is GameStop calling with an important message about your Ghostbuster reservation. Although we had hoped that Ghostbusters would release this year, Activision Blizzaed has decided not to publish this title. To have your reservation deposit refunded or to switch your reservation to aother game. Thank you. Goodbye.'"
I was instantly floored when I read that at work for a couple reasons. One, there's no confirmation that the game has been cancelled. I tried the official game website and not only does it NOT say that the game has been cancelled, but there's a nice big Activision logo at the top. The second reason this surprised me is that the game is essentially done. Being slated for an October release doesn't leave much time to add much development wise, so why would Activision cancel what is essentially a finished game and not cash in on the thousands of gamers waiting for what is being labeled the third Ghostbusters movie?
This is also interesting because GameStop has neglected other titles whose buns are in the fire, keeping their reserve SKUs up. Hopefully there is some clarification on this soon. Like an official announcement from Activision stating that ghosts will be busted in time for pumpkin carvin' time.
UPDATE: Did a little more research and found this on IGN. The plot thickens... I'm seriously visualising a future press conference from Sierra concerning this followed by some not so nice words for GameStop.

You have to know that this is a guaranteed cash cow. I mean you have all the voices from the original cast of ghostbusters being used in the movie, and not just rehashed lines from the movie but new content. You have a rabid fan base that is just desperate for a good ghostbusters game. I could see a big time publisher, maybe EA picking this up as the game is completed.
Ghostbusters the movie is owned by Sony Entertainment, so Sony could possibly pick this up and make it an exclusive game. From what I have read Sony has talked with Sierra so maybe we could see this. I know they also talked about delaying the game until around March of next year so they could release it alongside the 20th anniversary disc set of the movie.
After a bit more searching on the intertubes the biggest thing that I can find is the rumor that the game will be picked up by Sony (was Ghostbusters a Sony Pictures flick?) and it might be a PS3 exclusive. That would be dumb because that means they'd be scrapping three or four versions of the game for other consoles and you know they wouldn't make the money back on a PS3 release alone.
Yeah I also heard it would be published by someone else....But who????
this game will get a publisher.
NO! I think I WILL dust off my toy proton pack so I can beat Activision over the head with it. I doubt it's entirely cancelled and it was just conflicting with an already planned release so they're going to spread it out. If any tweaking can go into in that time, so be it. However, I can't think of an Activision game I wanted otherwise so it's time to cross the streams!
cant say i agree much with activision blizzard.. they dropped this but picked up spyro?? I mean spyro is good but this is such a fucking easy sell
Good article, Sean.
I dunno man, this doesn't say much for the game itself. Like you said, it has to be basically finished...and to drop it so late in the development cycle?
Although, even if it is a terrible game, there is so much hype and the Ghostbusters brand alone should sell enough copies to recoup some of their money.
I feel badly for those who already pre-ordered it. The game will hopefully not fall into the same boat as Duke Nukem.
this will sell like mad once someone picks it up
That's what made this seem weird. All they need is someone to cover the cost of disc pressing and shipping to stores. That's all they have to do besides count cash when the game sells like hot cakes.
all they need is a publisher
