- Force Unleashed impressions
- Posted 4 months, 2 weeks ago by Steak

I'll admit it - I was pretty skeptical about The Force Unleashed when I first heard about it. Just another Star Wars game I thought. I paid it no mind and continued my day. Eventually I tuned in and checked it out. Thankfully I was completely and utterly wrong.
The demo basically restates what is already known: unleashing the force is pretty damn awesome.
First off, the game felt a little more action-y then I expected, similar to the likes of Devil Mar Cry or God of War. Thankfully my worries were put to rest after playing around for a bit and getting the hang of things. Really though, I was expecting something more along the lines of Jedi Outcast/Academy (two of my personal faves, save for Shadows of the Empire).
The combat is... in a word or two, very extremely satisfying. Similarly to No More Heroes, destroying your enemies never gets old. You've got so many ways to dispatch them it's just plain awesome. You could smash them into a wall, smash something into them, throw a saber combo... whatever your heart desires. It never feels repetitive (even after playing the demo five times in a row).
Probably the most exciting feature of the game is your Force Grip power. You can pretty much grab any nearby object in the game, and do what you wish with it. Yes, you can even grab TIE Fighters that just happen to be nearby, and toss them at your foes. You can even grab your enemies and dispatch them how you see fit.
You've got two other powers at your disposal, Force Blast and Force Lightning. Force Blast is basically what it sounds like, a quick blast of force energy in front of you. Perfect for sending your enemies flying, or opening those dastardly blast doors (which is surpsingly satisfying!). Force Lightning is what we've all come to know and love. You can even charge up your saber with some lightning energy (which is pretty badass).
I do have a few gripes with the game though. Namely, the T-rating. You know what this means. No dismemberment! Arguably the best feature of Jedi Outcast (even if it was a cheat), you could chop off limbs, torsos, and even heads. I could just chop for hours on end. It's a shame it won't be in here, but I'll cope. Also, the jumping feels a little strange, not as fluid as one might expect. I didn't really see the point to all the jump-combos Starkiller has, but perhaps thats because there really isn't an opportunity to use them in the demo. Any other gripes were mostly minor things, just a few bugs and glitches (which I'm sure have been taken care of).
All in all, this is one game that will be highly recommended, and a must-buy for any Star Wars fan. The hard part will be waiting...

game is ok.. i mean it was fun and all, and i could use the force, but feels like a rental at best for me given there are tons of other games i think look better that i need to get
Thanks!
There are all kinds of theories floating around between me and my friends right now....Good point QMarc.....
For those who don't know or remember:
Starkiller was the original last name for Luke's character in the Original Trilogy.
Don't spoil it for the rest of us Josher...I just wanted to start some conspiracy theories about the story....
I read the comic so i kinda know already lol
Did anyone notice Starkillers recollection of how his family was slaughtered by Vader???? I wonder how that's going to play out???? Any theories????
I played both the XBox360 version and the PS3 version and I found that the PS3 version ran a little smoother. In that opening cut-scene when Vader waves his lightsaber to "Knight" our hero the XBox version skips a frame, or something like that, and then the scene continues. With the PS3 version there is no such skip and the graphics are, slightly, less rigid. So the only real difference I found between the two demo versions was that little thing. Otherwise a lot of fun.
@Coop: I thought it was an M-rated title. Then hopefully, dismemberment is in some form or another (be it a cheat or something similar).
I loved the demo except I thought the controls were kinda annoying...thats just my opinion though. : )
We talk about the dismemberment a lot in this week's somethingcast, but remember - JEDI OUTCAST WAS RATED T! They SO coulda done it in this!
