- Cover Developers
- Posted About 1 year ago by Veggie Jackson
It happens all the time in the music industry: A classic song has such an impact on a modern band that they have to do a cover of it. The results range from excellent (The Lemonheads’ version of Mrs. Robinson) to downright atrocious (Disturbed butchering Land of Confusion), but it seems there will never be a shortage of songs to cover, nor a lack of bands to do them. Sadly, we’ve never seen anything like this in the game world, even though there are certainly a ton of developers who have been inspired by the games of yesteryear and would love to put their own spin on them. Here’s a short list of titles I’d like to see re-done and the developers who should do them.
Game - Doom

Original – Id Software
Remake – 2K Games Boston
What they’ve done – BioShock
Why they should remake Doom – The original Doom was all about quick reflexes, intimidating enemies and devastating weapons. The creators of BioShock would take the classic fps, jack up the visuals and add their trademark ambience, creating an intense and truly creepy demon killing experience.
Game –Metal Gear Solid

Original – Konami
Remake – Ubisoft Montreal
What they’ve done – Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell series, Rainbow Six series
Why they should remake Metal Gear Solid – Ubisoft’s masterpiece Assassin’s Creed proves that there is still plenty of mileage left in stealth gaming when it’s done right. Add in their long history with the Tom Clancy games, and Ubisoft is the perfect candidate to put their own spin on Kojima’s seminal stealth action title. Perhaps they could even streamline the baffling MG:S storyline into something understandable by western audiences.
Game – Legend of Zelda

Original – Nintendo
Remake – Bethesda Software
What they’ve done – Elder Scrolls series
Why they should remake Legend of Zelda – Simply put, no one does sword and sorcery as well as Bethesda. Imagine Link’s first adventures through Hyrule in stunning 3d detail, with voice acting for every character and tons of optional side missions.
Game – Sonic the Hedgehog

Original – Sega
Remake – Insomniac
What they’ve done – Ratchet & Clank series
Why they should remake Sonic the Hedgehog – Insomniac has elevated the cartoonish platformer sub-genre to near perfection with their newest iteration of the Ratchet & Clank series. The jaw dropping visuals of Tools of Destruction sure would be impressive when viewed at 150 mph, and with Insomniac’s talent for gameplay variety, there would certainly be some amazing bonus levels to enjoy. If nothing else, it would be nice to see Sonic back in a human-free cartoon world again.
Game - ET

Original – Atari
Remake – Starbreeze
What they’ve done – Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, The Darkness
Why they should remake ET – Surely, someone must have been inspired by the abomination that was ET for the Atari 2600. Spielberg’s sci-fi fantasy classic may seem like a terrible choice for translation into game form, but if anyone can take an unmanageable property and turn it into gold, it’s Starbreeze: They took a terrible sequel to an average movie and made it into a masterpiece.

ETs finger should shoot laser beams in the remake....
You hit awesome points for everyone of them. I'm so going to play Escape from Butcher Bay again... every mention of it here is making me drool for more of it. :)
