GTA IV Neutered For Australian Audience?
Posted 9 months, 1 weeks ago by Veggie Jackson

Australia’s Office of Film and Literature Classification has given Grand Theft Auto IV an MA 15+ rating.  Sadly, the version of the game that will be available in Australia will be an edited one,  Rockstar confirmed that they have made an edited version of the game for sale in the land down under, though no details have been given as to what exactly has been changed.

Back in 2001, Australia refused to classify the standard version of GTA III because of the ability to pick up and … let’s say “utilize the skills of” prostitutes.  The game was later edited for the Aussie market, with the offending hookers removed.  He most recent iteration of the series faced controversy as well, with the “Hot Coffee” scandal resulting in all copies of GTA: San Andreas being pulled from Australian shelves.

We’ll have to wait until at least April 29 to find out what exactly has been changed for the foreign release, but the removal of women of ill repute is a pretty safe bet.  The MA 15+ rating is appended by the phrase “Strong Violence, Strong, Coarse Language, Drug and Sexual References.”  Sure sounds like the GTA experience to me.

The ranking system seems a little funky over there in the land of Foster's Beer. I always thought the MA rating was reserved for mature audiences only 18+? You know, the dirty stuff....
