- January Console Sales

NPD Group, an organization that tracks video game sales, is reporting that while the mighty Wii may have won January, as expected, the second place position may surprise you. Here’re the numbers:
Wii – 274,000
PS3 – 269,000
PS2 – 264,000
DS – 251,000
PSP – 230,000
Xbox 360 – 230,000
Yep, that’s the PS3 in second, ahead of even its more popular little brother, the PS2, and the ubiquitous DS. Admittedly, it’s a pretty tight grouping, with only a 12% difference between first and last, showing that the console wars are still being fought at a fever pitch.
Blame the shift on Microsoft’s alleged 360 shortages, Devil May Cry 4, reduced price points, an impressive slate of upcoming PS3 titles or whatever you want to, but the fact remains that the PS3 is picking up steam. Seems to jibe with analysts’ predictions about PS3 beating the 360 this year in overall sales.
