- YOUR Game of the Year?
- Posted About 1 month ago by Voyou San
So lets hear it people, if you had to name one game right now that you think was by far the greatest thing to hit this video game year, what would it be? There have been many great titles this year that it might be hard to pick just one, but please try and find one on your list that for you was above the rest :)
So my 2008 Game of the Year would be... (drumroll)
METAL GEAR SOLID 4 - PS3
To me no game even comes close to touching the godlike game that was MGS4. I have not been that into a game in a long time and MGS4 truly pulled me in. Many will bitch about long cutscenes but to me, with the exception of one scene at the end, were just perfect and did a great job of telling the story and really bringing some characters to life. The combat was fluid and fun, the gun selection was great, the charm was there, the humor, the seriousness, the action. It simply had it all. For me the game had no weakness in the single player. On the side of the multiplayer, it was a fun experience that except for the crappy Konami ID setup was a fun way to spend some hours and played very well with for me hardly any lag issues. All this said and I have yet to even mention that the game just lookgreat, expressions, movements were fluid and realistic.
My runner ups for the award would probably be
Fallout 3 (PS3/360) and LittleBigPlanet (PS3)

Yes i did, Like Oni said you want to continue the story no matter what.
Marcus Fenix is an amazing character and Dom truley does speak what the player would be saying.
It may not have 2 hour long cutscenes, but Gears 2 does flesh out a pretty good story. The kind that makes you want to find out what happens next.
I have a question for C Dew.. Did you actually say Gears and amazing story in the same sentence? Just curious..thought maybe i was reading it wrong..
Wii Fit maybe deserves a kudos or something, but i really don't see it as a Game of the Year candidate.
@J-Man:
It's a community-based game. It's full of fun levels on its own but as soon as you go online there's a, literally, whole world of levels created by people. I do admit that there are some that are just horrible; that's to be expected, but I would have to agree to disagree with your statement. Especially the one about Wii Fit. I understand the game and its mechanics. I just don't like the Wii.
Forgot about WiiFit. It does deserve some recognition.
What boundaries did LBP break? It's a solid, basic platformer. With an extensive level editor, sure, but I fail to see what's so ground-breaking about it.
@BananaSaur:
What's wrong with the PlayStation3? You "hate giving it to a ps3 title..., .."? Why bother, then, to do so? I like that you chose Little Big Planet for your winner, but come on! Do you really hate the PlayStation3 that much? You'll have to explain this one. I figure if I can like more than one console then everyone else should be able to like more than one console.
i hate giving it to a ps3 title... but LBP has broken so many boundaries and continues to amaze and inspire so many..., but i find it way too difficult to pick just one game... i think wii fit also deserves some contention for the craftsmanship of the balance board and the ability to get the laziest of gamers (read: me) off of their ass and exercising without even knowing it.
Well, it's kind of hard for me to tell. I only own a Wii and DS, and while there were a number of good games for both systems, none really stand out for GotY. On top of that, I haven't played most of the nominees, but I'll go with TooColson on this one. MegaMan 9 is too much of a breath of fresh air to simply ignore.
What!? Megaman 9 FTW!
No GTA IV, love? Oh how quickly they forget....
I'm gonna have to go with GTA IV with Fallout 3 as a CLOSE second. Clearly, the sandbox is where my heart lies.
I gotta go Gears 2 also.
It continues an already amazing story and makes it better.
Multiplayer is one of the best especially now with horde mode.
Runner up i would have to say Fallout.
I would add LBP as a runner up but i havent gotten to play it or see it played. But from what i hear it is as good as expected so it could easily be GOTY also
I haven't played Fallout 3 yet and just started with Fable 2 so I can't say for sure, but I'm going to go with Gears of War 2.
The single player campaign is great. I know some people didn't like the vehicle portions but I thought they did a great job of breaking up the corridor shooting with something a little more epic. I loved the Gears 1 campaign, but I felt like it got a little monotonous as you went along. Gears 2 does a much better job of giving you variety.
They've also improved upon a multiplayer game that kept me entertained for almost two years by adding tons of new gametypes that are, for the most part, fun. I know there's been a big uproar about matchmaking not working, but since all I ever play are private matches anyway I couldn't care less. With the addition of bots, it's never hard to get a multiplayer room going, even if you only have a few people online. I've yet to play a map I didn't like, whereas on Gears 1 there were a handful that I just hated (unfortunately, the wart that is Tyro Station came along for the ride).
Epic may not have given us the four player coop we desired, but I think they did a great job of filling the gap with Horde. It's an intense experience to be holed up in a building with a wall of boomshields keeping the Locust at bay while you desperately try and stop them from overrunning you. I could play Horde all day, and already have a friendly competition going to see who can get the highest score.
For my money, you don't get more bang for your buck than Gears 2. I think I'll enjoy Fallout 3 and Fable 2 single player better, but I won't be playing either of them in two years like I will Gears.
I would have to agree with your assessment, here, Voyou. As I said when I spoke to you when Spike announced their nominees; I had to choose from what the mainstream [and Spike TV] were expecting to win.
These are, if not, the same pics that I would have chosen given a fair and equal playing field with selection.
