Red Bull becomes first brand on PlayStation Home
by Elizabeth Clifford-Marsh, Revolution UK 02-Dec-08, 10:31
LONDON - Red Bull has become the first brand to build a presence in PlayStation Home, Sony's much anticipated virtual world, Revolution can reveal.
Red Bull has built a tropical island, featuring an aeroplane racing game based on Red Bull's real world Red Bull Air Race series.
Home is currently under construction and likely to be opened up for public testing before the end of 2008.
The virtual world will enable gamers to create avatars, interact with each other, create their own apartments, play games, and stream video and music, by connecting to the internet through their PS3 consoles.
John Beasley, brand marketing manager for Red Bull UK said Home represents an opportunity for brands to create "memorable and rich content".
"The game gave us the first opportunity to recreate in the gaming world what we try to do in the real world, which is to facilitate interaction, to give people stories, memories, experiences and a really good opportunity to interact with the brand," he said.
Beasley said Home will show marketers how in-game advertising can be used effectively and will open up the medium to more brands. "It's an easy environment for brands to take that first step into gaming," he added.
Sony has set up Home so that gamers and brands can "generate significant revenues", but has not revealed details of brands it is working with.
A spokesman for Sony said that brand partnerships for Home will be announced at a later date.

i see what your saying and where you are going with it and if it does get totally out of hand i agree, but if its billboards, posters, videos on the big screens they have setup or virtual spaces set aside for these companies than IMO that is all fine and dandy
I know what you are saying, Voyou, and I can agree on some counts. We've all gotten pretty desensitized to modern advertising, so it's basically all white noise.
I just think that (and I really hope this doesn't happen) there is a possibility that advertisers realize they need to start pushing to make themselves stand out in this virtual space. That's where you get extremely obnoxious, over-the-top ads designed to smash their way into our consciousness. That's when things get bad and start to pull you out of the virtual world they've created.
I just see that as a possible future for this branded content. I think it could threaten HOME feeling like a legit virtual space.
all the ads in HOME have not been bad, they have been subtle and if they do have audio attached then all you have to do is walk away from it and you cannot hear it. I mean this is a seperate place in HOME that you will have to travel to, its not like they are forcing you to go and see the red bull plane. I would much rather see an poster or two advertising something on the wall in HOME than having to pay monthly for the service. I mean come on people, ads are not that bad. You drive past a billboard, it has an ad. It does not take away from your driving, just as a poster inside home or a seperate area that red bull has purchased with a game, jet and whatnot in it, does not take away from the HOME experience. If anything this only adds to it, gives it a feeling of a real place, like its alive. If this was a game, it would be different, but its a service and to help make the service feel alive i think adds are good.
I dont think Sony would let it get too out of control. Give them a little credit.
I agree with J-man - sure, free shit is awesome. But do you want free shit that has ugly ass logos and giant voice call-outs that play on repeat every 30 seconds? Cause that's the type of shit you get with "branded entertainment".
this is not a game, its a service, i see no problem with the advertising. Sony is giving us a free online service, it is completely fine if they want to make a little money via advertising in a service like HOME. Plus advertising makes home seem a little bit more alive, active and whatnot.
I know, but I'm just resisting the idea. I'd like to keep as much advertising as possible out of my games.
Don't "ugh" it man, this is what keeps it free and updated.
i dont see why anyone would have an issue with this
Ugh, product placement.
Cool, I'm still somewhat hoping home actually does become a big thing.
Let me know if Grey Goose moves into an adjacent property.
