It's the year 2112 and the worst global crisis imaginable is about to occur. Earth's orbital path around the sun has brought it directly into the path of a large meteor shower. Should a large meteor impact the planet's surface, the human species could very well be eliminated. Earth's demise is at hand and you've been put in charge of the weapon developed by the world governments. As the gunner for a huge beam cannon installed in Earth orbit, you must destroy all the meteors before they enter Earth's atmosphere.
2112: The Battle for Planet Earth is a 2D fixed screen shooter in the style of Missile Command, although the asteroids and meteors approach from all angles, not just the top of the screen. The Earth sits directly in the middle of the screen and you aim the beam cannon by moving a square targeting cursor up, down, left and right and try to pick off the targets as they appear. Once the cursor brackets a target, simply shoot the beam by pressing the joystick button.
The goal is to save Earth from destruction by destroying all the meteors that appear at the edge of the screen before they make their journey to the center and impact the planet. Meteors appear singularly or in a group of up to four at a time and all must be destroyed. Points are awarded for each meteor shot and the beam cannon can be fired as many times and as frequently as desired. ~ Kyle Knight, All Game Guide
