Air Trix is Sega's second stand-up skateboarding simulation, utilizing an actual board connected to the cabinet that moves back and forth, simulating the action of actually being on a skateboard. But whereas Top Skater was a downhill jaunt where stunts were done off of anything one could find to trick off of, Air Trix focuses exclusively on half pipe action, eschewing the sprawling downhill courses for small areas of play that are pipe-exclusive.

The gameplay is very similar to Top Skater, in that a player will hop on the board and steer it back and forth, winding themselves up for the best possible jumps in order to trick. But whereas Top Skater simply relied on the player to hit the back of the board as late in the jump as possible to trick, Air Trix has a deeper system, utilizing a combo system and introducing a few new techniques. Players can now decide what tricks they'll perform, and they have the ability to spin by aiming to the side as they launch off of the ramp, then modifying that move by tapping either forward or backward on the board. Players can also plant at the lip of a rail or grind along it, depending on their speed and bearing.

Air Trix provides two levels of difficulty in addition to the training mode that explains how to do various tricks. The two modes each feature different half-pipes and take place in a different area. The Easy mode features the Town, which has a simple half-pipe, and the Stadium, which features three half-pipes, one set slightly above the other like a staircase. The Hard mode takes place first in a Factory, which has an extremely long half-pipe, and the Suburbs, which again features three half-pipes, only now they are separated by different-sized gaps to make breaking a neck all the more simple.

As with Top Skater, Air Trix features a rating system based on letters. Each trick earns the player a certain amount of coins. As the player builds up more coins they advance in rank, eventually hoping to get the coveted A ratings, or perhaps even shoot into the realm of the great S. There are five different characters immediately selectable within the game -- two men, two women, and a little boy named Tony. ~ Jon Thompson, All Game Guide
