Apocalyptica is a third-person action title set in a distant, forlorn future where Satan has left the bowels of the underworld in a concerted effort to control the universe. As one of the last remaining champions of humanity, players must unite with fellow military members in a last-ditch effort to stop Satan and his dark army by mounting a full-scale assault on Planet Nu-Hades. Yet players can also side with the devil himself, with a choice of 16 good or 16 evil characters available as they decide on the four-man team needed to wage war.

The battles take place amidst dank sewers, desolate wastelands, and ominous fortresses as players lead their four-man unit to destroy or defend Satan's key strongholds. Missions vary with each locale, from retrieving items to performing specific tasks while dealing with numerous enemies at every turn. Each character fights using a combination of melee and projectile weapons, with certain characters also having the power to cast spells.
