Battlefield 1943 is an online shooter in which up to 24 players head to three famous WWII-era islands for large-scale air, land, and sea battles. Gamers choose to fight as either a member of the U.S. Marine Corps or a soldier in the Japanese Imperial Army, with each side offering three different classes, and each of the three classes possessing primary, alternate, and melee weapons. Infantrymen come equipped with a sub-machine gun, a grenade launcher, and a wrench, Riflemen wield their gun, a grenade attachment, and a bayonet, and Scouts do battle with a sniper rifle, a pistol, a sword, and explosive charges. Battles take place on the varied environments of Wake Island, Iwo Jima, and Guadalcanal, with a fourth campaign known as "Coral Sea" unlockable once the gaming community as a whole reaches 43 million total kills. The terrain on all three islands is highly destructible, thanks to EA DICE's "Frostbite" game engine, which means players must employ strategy when calling for support in the form of bombing raids or tank advancements. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide
