Developed by Blizzard Entertainment and set in the tradition of Flashback: The Quest for Identity, Blackthorne is a side-scrolling platform shooter with hundreds of enemies, close to 1,000 frames of animation and powerful weapons. Over the course of seventeen levels, you'll find yourself in the middle of murky catacombs, sewer systems, forests, and evil caves. Also located throughout each mission are various puzzle solving elements and hidden corridors. Puzzles involve unlocking doors with items or pressing buttons to open up new portions of the level.

Although helpful NPCs aid you in your quest, you'll also deal with large, repulsive monsters filled with hatred and one objective: to kill you. Monsters and other hazards include the goblin-esque Grag'Ohr, blue demons known as Whar'Ork, rock beasts, plants with deadly tentacles, and spider mines. When all is said and done, you'll be face to face with Sarlac. Fortunately, you'll have access to various weapons including a shotgun, hover bombs, fire and remote bombs. Your default shotgun is upgraded throughout the game, becoming more powerful and effective as you progress. There are also helpful items including keys, health potions and levitation pads for those out-of-reach places.

Created for the single player, Blackthorne features digitized sound effects and a password system to load and save games, with options to turn the sound effects and music on or off. ~ Matthew House, All Game Guide
