  • Overall

Captain America and the Avengers was probably a game that should have never been
made. It appears to be thrown together quickly. The gameplay and graphics are not
smooth and fluid like other action games in the late 1980s and the early 1990s.

First, the control is shaky at best. When you go to make your character jump, you're never
really sure what he's going to do while he's in the air. He might do something good. He
might just float there. It's always hit or miss with this game.

Second, Marvel Comics and Data East didn't exactly go all out when they supplied
characters for this game. Sure, Captain America and Iron Man are marquee
players, but Hawkeye was not extremely popular in the early 1990s (although he
probably was at the peak of his fame). And Vision, who the heck is that? Hardcore
comics fans know who he is, but few others did. If you were to play this game with three
friends and you get stuck with Vision, you better realize that you are the least popular
    person in your clique.

Third, Captain America and the Avengers felt like too many other games. It was a rip-
off of the popular late 80s hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game which, in turn, was
very similar to games like Renegade and Double Dragon. It looks as though the
developers didn't really want to try anything innovative with this game. They just wanted a
game on the market quickly before comic book sales began to decline again.

Overall, Captain America and the Avengers is not a great game. The graphics are not
extremely bad, but they're subpar when compared to some of the games in the same era. The
lack of fluid controls really takes away from this game, which isn't good because there
wasn't a whole lot there to begin with. ~ Anthony Baize, All Game Guide
